Search Caribbean US IMG Seeking a Competitive Residency

Good day everyone... I would like to explain my story and hopefully get some good advice from all the knowledgable people on this site.

I am a FMG (US Citizen attending a Caribbean school.) I took and passed step 1 with a 226 in November, and due to serious rotation issues at my school I was forced to transfer schools and will now be starting rotations in the next 2 months. My old school was backed up for months unfortunately which is why I didn't start right away.

I know having a Visa is a definite advantage for me (amidst the list of disadvantages by being a Carib student), but I suppose the 226 kind of gave me hope of landing a decently competitive residency. I'd kind of like to go into general surgery, anesthesiology or possibly emergency medicine. I know these are all tough to get, but I am remaining determined and looking for advice.

Beyond going for a 240+ on my step 2, what things can I really do through this next year to boost my chances of landing a good residency when I apply next September? I'm very motivated and I'd really like to do everything possible to secure one of these positions.

USCE is the answer.

You need to join for a high profile hospitals/universities in the US for observership and/or externship and get great US LoRs.

Also try to do research in the specialty you are looking for and it would be great if you can publish it in a peer reviewed journal.

Also, as you mentioned, shoot for 240+ in CK.

Not to deter you from your dreams.. but a transfer is considered a "redflag"

I think EM is quite possible with what you have, as for gen surgery and anesthesio.. looks difficult.

Hopefully you transferred from a Top 4 school to another Top 4.

Does USCE stand for United Stated clinical experience? If so... well, all my rotations are done in US hospitals.

And hopefully a program will understand that I transferred due to the fact that my school wanted to put me on hold OVER 6 months after I finished step 1... If they don't then there's nothing I can do about that. I'm not going to miss 2014 match because my school is disorganized, and I'm just hoping residency programs will agree.

EDIT: Just noticed I misspelled the title lol... sorry!

I disagree. Yes a transfer is a red flag but that can be explained eloquently in the PS. I know many Carib grads who transfer schls cause of rotation or financial issues (happens quite a bit) actually, and that never even came up in the IVs.

Gen surgery isnt out, and neither is anesthesiology. Applicant is a US citizen, with 2 yrs of USCE (as a Carib student), 226 in Step 1, if they get a 240+ in CK, and get great Surgery LORs (from electives and sub-i's), while networking, they'll definitely secure several IVs. I've seen it every yr in the past couple of years from folks that I know, and they didnt go to the so-called Top 4. Dont buy into the hype.

If you can get surgery research, then great, if not then I'll say rock the heck out of CK, and impress surgery attendings that can pull strings, and apply broadly, esp if money isnt an issue.

Hey Lena, that post really gave me a lot of inspiration and validation for what I am doing. I worked hard to get to where I am at, and I'm going to keep working harder to go even further.

I'm going to put everything into Step 2 and my rotations and all I can do is hope for the best! Again, thanks for the helpful advice!
