Default Is it ok to work for a year or so before applying to residency?

Hello there, I's not sure if this is the right place to post, but I'd appreciate the feedback if you guys can give it.

As posted above, do you think residency programs would find it ok if an IMG worked first before applying to residency? From what I've read, the longer the gap between residency and medical school, the lower your chances of getting in, with some programs even stating that they have a cut off for the number of years post medical school. And from what I've read as well, programs want you to account for the time off, if you did anything medically related i.e. research, volunteer work, etc.

Its just that, medical school isn't cheap, and we just recently moved to the US, so it took a toll on us financially. I'd want to be able to secure myself financially before I push on.

I'm planning to apply for a pathology residency. I graduated 2015, I'll be working probably the whole of 2016, and then submit my application in 2017 for the 2018 match. So that's around 3 years post medical school.

So do you think it I would still have a chance? Say I worked extra hard and got good USMLE scores, would my taking a year off (well in this case, 3 given the whole applying process) be ok with residency programs?

Well, any work that's available of course. Say worse case it's not medically related. But it's not a want, it's more of a need. Would you think programs would be understanding?

Or would you know if pathology in particular is IMG friendly? Or is it one of those specialties that are difficult to get in to just by virtue of being a foreign graduate?

I wouldn't mention it unless weren't asked directly. Let it be implied that you spent this year in preparation for the exams and so forth.
