Many people with CS attempts match every year, don't worry about it. Make your CV stronger by good scores and USCE.

Can you kindly let me talk to one of those IMGs who failed the CS and got matched!
Just one of the many, just one.

I think a CS failure is an effective end of the story, sorry to say that, but that's the truth.

I prefer telling the truth over giving false advises where people might take them and go waste efforts and money and time for something that is virtually impossible.

No. Not true. I was just on the prep4usmle.com forum and a member who failed CS actually got matched. Of course, he did have a Green Card...but IDK how cool it is to say "give up". Everyone knows that this exam is really unpredictable and very subjective. The best may fail, the worst may pass.

They really have to modify this test if it is true that it becomes a dead-end. It's not fair because the future of an applicant shouldn't be in hands of an SP.

Hello Mary,
We can talk if you want. I have an attempt to CS and I matched, internal medicine. Also, I know at least three people this year who matched to very good program with attempts (ophthalmology, 2 I.M). I was wondering for the same thing when I started my path to the residency. But if you have a CS attempt doesn't mean ANYTHING!!!
I got 12 interviews and I matched in my first choice, a STELLAR university program. Also, I got a prematch offer from a well known program but I declined the offer.
Mary, probably you are not in the USA because you don't know anything about the match. If you have attempt in CS you will get a smaller number of interviews but when you get the interview you are in the same boat like the other people without attempt or with much higher scores than yours. I have friends who didn't match or matched to a much lower program than mine and they had better CV than mine. Mary don't say things that you don't know. Also, I would like to say that I don't have connections and I need visa.
An overall good CV (scores >230, USCE, research) will give you interviews and if you are good at the interview you will get the position.

Parag I can assure you that is not the end of the game. Please feel free to ask me whatever you like. I had the same feelings when I failed the CS and I was thinking that is the end of the world but it's not. If you have attempt to CS try to improve other parts of your CV and you will be fine. Like good scores, research, observerships.

P.S
Also, I am looking for my good friend Wonder...

My uni room-mate got matched this year, these are his credentials (by chronological order):

Step 1 228
2 months USCE, with 2 LOR's (one for each month)
Step 2 CS failed 1st time!
Step 2 Cs passed 2nd time
Step 2 260's

---------------------
No passport/green card
No research
IMG

He matched into a nice "community" hospital program, IM, with ALOT of fellowship programs!

Nothing is the end in the US, the american dream includes those taking steps. Work hard, and anything can be overshadowed.

Default Matched

I failed CS the first time and cleared it in my second attempt..
I received 5 calls..I applied to over 168 programs.
and this is my first attempt to apply for match
Step1 224
Step2 256
Step 3 209
USCE 3 months of hands on experience
Research-- Pilot project with retrospective analysis of Lung CA in association with Oxford Univ UK..
Date of graduation-- May 25th 2011..

Do not lose hope. All that they want is good communication skills.I was never quizzed about my attempt in any of my interviews.
I kind of agree that an attempt in CS is a bummer in ur long journey..coz to receive a call you need to meet their criteria.
I did not meet the criteria for over 35-40 programs coz they wanted only students who passed CS on first attempt. So it was discouraging at the beginning..
But once u get an opportunity pls do not let it go..work hard on ur interpersonal skills/communication/spoken english/face expressions etc etc..

Improving ur CV in other areas does help to some extent..giving step3 will be an added bonus

I had a CS attempt and matched this season. My first match application and the last. I matched with a single interview in a university hospital. I said it before in the match thread and I will say it now NO PLACE FOR PESSIMISTS. good luck everybody.

Congrats to all of you. Is there a list of programs for applicants with CS attempt? Please i would appreciate it. And which programs to apply or target after attempt? Any idea? As most programs say that 1st attempt in all exams. I heard many say no 2nd attempt on website, but still interviews those with second attempt. Help please. This CS exam is so subjective exam.

Thanks for your Words of encouragement here. I failed CS and been feeling down with low energy to want to take CK.
This is my profile

Step 1 - 240
MPH from a US school
Some publications while in medskool
Year of Grad 2010.
Taking CK in 2 weeks and retaken CS. Have some USCE in Surgery and IM

Applying to IM and Psychiatry.

Just curious how slim are my chances.

Default Please help!

I failed CS and step 1 175 failed. I reappeared for CS and passed. Now I want to know whether I stand any chance of getting into a residency program before starting with my Step1 prep again. Any help would be appreciated. I have 3 months of USCE and 2 LORs. Please help if you can.

Hi,
I am very desperate about my situation.
Step 1 231
Step 2 218
Step 3 192
CS 1st attept
1 year of clinical fellowship experience in USA
residency in home country, old IMG, currently on J2 visa
applying for one of the most competetive specialties.
I feel so dissappointed, also trying to find research for this year for the same specialty.

Default how to justify a CS attempt ???

Hey guys, what would be the best way to justify a second attempt during an interview??

I failed the CS just because of the CIS part. I guess I went too confident to the exam, but I don't think that's a good excuse. So far I have 3 interviews (all with contacts, I don't think I will be receiving anymore)

I would not dare to say it was because of lack of preparation, I don't want them to think I am not a hardworker.

I could say I was nervous, but then I think that would reflect inability to perform in stressful situations.

Another option would be to say that there are lots of "tricks" that most IMGs don't know about, mainly in terms of working with standardized patients (as far as I know most US grads work with SPs since their 1st year of med school)

Any ideas? suggestions??

Sorry to hear that you failed. I wouldn't say that last one either. With that you're basically telling them that you, as an IMG are not as prepared as an AMG. And with that statement you also bring down all other IMGs, even those who passed without "tricks".

In my opinion, go with honesty. Have insight on where you think you went wrong, did you underestimate the exam, not prepare as you will on the 2nd time. Getting nervous is still ok. It's the first exam many of us have had that is structured that way and it's natural to be extremely nervous.

Good luck.

I think I underestimated the exam. I mean, I got the first aid for the CS and prepared for a couple of weeks, but basically i focused on doing everything on time. From what I felt, I think the reason I failed CIS because I was not aware of the importance of " tricks" (eventhough I was courteous, looked in the eye, described the PE) and because I had a couple of difficult patients. One of them was a guy with acute abdomen, that would be moaning all of the time, I could not even do the PE.
How to justify an exam that is not even REALLY known by PDs, they just get the pass -fail score without being aware of the subcomponents, and how they are graded. I mean, the CIS evaluation is done by the patient, with a check list, come on!!
