I know people with similar scores that did in fact match into surgery, but it was preliminary. Categorial is whole another story.

Prelim surgery is just PGY1. You have to apply again for categorical PGY2 position which goes till the end of training i.e PGY5.
For IMGs its easier to get into a prelim PGY1 position than a categorical PGY1 position. Once you are into a categorical program it means that by the end of your 5 years you will be a qualified general surgeon. This is not with prelim positions.
You don't need to have prelim surgery before starting the categorical program but if you don't get into a categorical one then you can do 1 year of prelim and then try matching at the same program or somewhere else again for PGY2 positions.

People in 230s do get into surgery. The most important thing after scores is surgical experience in the US. If you have 1 year of research at a good program it opens up a lot of opportunities. Good luck!

Oh thank you , but does it get easier to get into PGY 2 in surgery after prelim ??? Are there specific prelims for specific branches , like Surgery prelim for Surgery or you can do it in any branch ??? sorry my Qs may appear stupid but lack of guidance is our problem ......
Because if someone gets into a surgery prelim in June 2012 and then he would have to apply again in sept 2012 for Cat PGY 2 . so its very clear he will have no additional experiences or externships to add to his CV ... so then just getting into a prelim will boost his chances of getting a PGY 2 match interview ???

thanks

Yes it gets easier because you are already in the system.
No there are no specifics for different specialties. The prelim is in General surg and then you can go in ortho, urology, ent....etc. Some programs have there own prelims and then they guarantee you a spot for the advanced categorical position.
By the time you apply for PGY2 position and have IVs you will have 3-4 months of experience already as IVs happen in Nov-Jan. So definitely it will help you. All the people applying for PGY2 positions would have done PGY1 somewhere like you so you will have to stand out from them by getting good recommendations from your program.
