Default Big city vs small city- match advice

Hi friends!

I am an IMG planning to apply this year (sep 2016) to Internal Medicine, my credentials are: Step 1= 215 in 1st attempt, Ck= haven't done, and Step 2CS= failed, need to do it again.

My husband applied to residency and right now he is creating his ranking list for the 2016 Match, he has some options in small cities like in Illinois, Iowa, and others options here in the north east. I was looking for my options, and in the small cities there's in total 3 and here in NY let's say 8 or more, where my criteria is full field.

I've heard that in cases where people are married, when someone gets into a program, it can help they spouse to get into residency, particularly if it's in small places. The program helps couples stay together. So, my question is; is it better to go to a small place because my husband's entry could help me even though there's less options? or is it better to stay in big cities where there are more chances but no "help" from spouse?

Also I thought applying to family medicine, to have more opportunities

Thank you so much for your help in this situation guys, I really appreciate your time!

Based on what information you came to the conclusion that ' small programs are more willing to take spouse' ?
In reality, nobody knows where you will have more chances. You should consider multiple possibilities.
1) Your husband goes for a small city program, he arranges the match for you in this program. Great
2) Your husband goes for a small city program, he fails to arrange the match for you. Well, now you're stuck with small city program there are zero research opportunities and no way to get LORs with great names on them.
3) Your husband goes for a big city program, he arranges the match for you. Great.
4) Your husband goes for a big city program, he fails to arrange the match for you. You can work on your CV in the other places, get to know people in academic medicine.
As you can see, going for small community program in a small city can have poor outcome not only for your husband, but also for you.
The only way to know whether the small community program is truly family friend is be extremely observant during the interview.

I don't think the question is proper. A big city like Seattle/Denver/SF as very few surrounding residency centers, where as a more suburban rural area like Central Illinois/Ohio/Michigan/Texas has tons.

This whole idea of helping spouses getting into the same program/hospital is too much of a random factor to even put thought into, and you're basing that on hearsay/anecdotes.

So what you can do is discuss with your husband if he wants to rank his programs based where there are many surrounding FM programs, or not.

PS. With your scores so far, I'd focus more on FM, and even that will be a tough match. Programs hate seeing step failures from IMGs.
