Listening Chances of Residency in North America (US/Canada) after failing Step 1 ?

Hi everyone,

I failed my step 1 last year and now I've been studying to retake the exam. I am aiming for 225+ and then I will be starting my clinical rotations. I am hoping to apply for the 2014 match. I am an IMG but a Canadian citizen. What are my chances of getting Family Med, Emergency Med or Surgery if I have 1 failed attempt on my record ?

I know everyone says that get good LOR's and USCE ... My rotations will be in the US so I will have the USCE but what else can I do to increase my chances? Would my application be "red flagged" by A LOT of the hospitals without any consideration?

Has anyone failed step 1 and matched before?

Sorry for asking so many questions and Thanks in advance to whoever helps!

Was hoping it wouldn't come to me telling you this, but chances are very slim for Gen Surgery and EM. Those two are trending to be even more competitive specialties. I know an upperclassman from my school who had solid scores 230/244/CS/US Citizen/SLoRs/etc that didn't get into EM this year.

But FM you would be able to achieve, just make sure you score well! 200+ is a must, because by the time you apply (which might be 2015 not 2014), things are expected to be super super difficult because AMG grads are suppose to level out to a number of residency spots.

Thanks for the info man. Why don't you think I'll be able to apply for the 2014 match? I want to finish step 1 this year and step 2 by next year June (I have more than a year lol)

And I know the chances are decreased but I know of alot of ppl who have failed step 1 and still managed to match! I dont know how your friend didn't match. There must've been something else. I know a person who failed step 1 three times and got matched to EM this year But yeah, as for EM or surgery, I dont really know about those, I know for FM I still have a chance - also because there are more seats available for it. Well, just gotta try it out!

How'v you been ? When is your step 2? When are you applying for the match? 2013?

Well this is supposing that your school has no delays in setting up rotations/in between rotations, you do back to back rotations, and do not take time to study for CS / CK. Those could lead to serious delays that would lead you to miss the timelines.

Theoretically anything is possible, I was just basing my answers off of what I've personally seen and the NRMP match stats from last year.

I've been good.. CS is May 8th, CK haven't scheduled yet! OB GYN Rotation is insane! Almost 90 hours a week and so I have no time to study for either.. I guess ill just go to CS cold without any simulated practice.

And yea, I'm going for this years match (2013).

When are you taking step???

Wow good luck on your CS! Rotations sound crazy busy! With my situation I can start rotations of up to 12 weeks right now but then I have to take my step right after. I am planning on taking my step 1 end of May although it depends on my readiness. My eligibility ends in June. I do feel like I've come a long way in my prep which is good!

And good luck for this years Match too! Hopefully you hear some good news next year
