Question The Pre-lim year?

Assuming one applies for Prelim surgery as a road to Anesthesiology, do they apply for Prelim Surgery and CA-1 during the same match cycle or apply (and match of course) into prelim surgery, and then apply next year for CA-1?

A similar doubt I had is going to PGY-2 in GS after a pre-lim GS year. I know you can apply for PGY-2 and hope for the best if a position opens up. Can you also apply to PGY-1 categorial positions and repeat the intern year? I've heard that this done too often due to conflicts with government GME funding.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, you can apply to prelim, pgy1 and pgy2 (advanced programs) in the same match however you will either match to prelim and/or advanced OR CAT PGY1. If you matched to prelim alone then you may apply the next year agian to PGY1. Residents in the US are funded for a total of 4 years, this way you may do prelim then match to cat pgy1 next year. If you did prelim twice and then matche dto cat pgy1 then the fifth year you will do will be unpaid (if the PD accepted your plan) or you may find external funding.

Hi ApplicantGuide,

I like to know how we should apply for PGY2 and preliminary programs simultaneously? Is there any guideline or tutorial for that?
Also, I wonder how we should rank preliminary, categorical and advanced programs after interviews. For example, if I get interview in PGy2 of neuro and Pgy1 of IM and prelim IM, and if my first choice is neuro, second choice IM, and I do not want any prelim alone, then how should I rank these programs for match?

I sincerely appreciate your help
