Smile DrSeddick Finally Matched!!!

Finally I did it! I have been working for this for a long time (2009). Still I think the faults I did are all because of weaknesses in planning. I am going to briefly tell you my experience, I'll mention what helped me and what my mistakes were, hopefully somebody would benefit from them.

I started with step 2 CK (I think this is the first mistake). I was really good at internal medicine, this helped me a lot. I watched the Kaplan video course only, plus 700 Qs of USMLE World and a couple of pre-test book series. A better approach would have been taking step 1 first, read the Kaplan notes for step 2 CK and completing UW question bank. Pre-test books were a waste of time. It took me around 6 months to study for it, I got 224/92.

Then I took step 1 exam. Took me 6 months. I read the First Aid supplemented with text books, the internet and Kaplan notes when needed. I did USMLE World questions. That was enough to get 238/99 score. If I spent more time on it, I know I would have gotten more.

Then I failed the CS the first time. I am very honest when I tell you that the only thing I added to my performance the second time I took it is "Sorry to hear about your condition, I will do the best I can to ...". Otherwise I am sure I did better in the first try. I also made a template for all the patients and I had one of my friends to help me. Anyway, it took me two tries to pass it. It would have certainly helped if I subscribed in CS videos the first time, or get any kind of courses.

Between both tries for the CS came the match season 2011, I applied for it though I did not pass the CS, my scores were as mentioned above and I needed a visa, No USCE.. Oh, and I was a first year Pediatric resident by that time. I only applied for 30 programs, I thought if I get one interview I'll do it and get my second try in the CS. That was a mistake too. I did not get any interviews.

I waited for some time, applied for the CS again, passed, then waited till the 2012 match came. By then I was a second year pediatric resident in Syria. I applied for 50 Pediatric programs, 50 Internal Medicine programs (I also like IM) and 10 FM programs. I made my own IMG friendly list. I made it by going to frieda, see the programs and send the ones I am interested in, and I meet their requirements e mails, asking them if I should apply (with my second attepmt on CS). I sent about 230 e mails, got 140 replies, some of them positively, others really told me that it was not a good idea. I was amazed of how honest they were, it was really helpful and money saving. It took a lot of time though. I got three interviews in Pediatrics only! When I got my first interview I decided that I should travel to the US. Financially I couldn't travel to the US that frequently.

I did an observership after the beginning of match season (in November) so my application did not contain any USCE or US LORs. I got three interviews in Pediatrics, did all of them in December and gave the LOR to the program directors during the interview. Pediatric interviews are really friendly and easy going. I thought I was under-qualified for one place which interviewed me, because the applicants who interviewed with me had more interviews and better CVs. Though, I am being very objective when I say that the work me is better than paper me (the CV).

I went back to my residency in Syria, waited till the match result is out, then travelled back to the US for the postmatch. I had a very poor expectation. In my 3 interviews, I had no connections. I have a lot of friends in the US, but I don't have any connections. The results were out, I matched in the best program I applied to, the one I thought I wasn't qualified for!!

Being a Pediatric resident really helped me. After all I applied for the same number of programs in IM, I did not get any interviews. The program I got accepted at was requesting that applicants should have graduated for less than 2 years, or have been in clinical training within 2 years from the application. I had my graduation four years ago, but I was in clinical training. During the interview, I had a lot of topics to talk about. Though the hospital I worked in was under-equipped, it was very very busy. I have seen a lot of variety of cases that are only case reports. It gave me something to talk about. If I would not be accepted in the US, I would still have my job.

Finally, this Forum was always there. When ever I had any question, I found the answer to it here. I got the UW subscription from here. I am very thankful to all the people who helped me here, especially the staff. They are very intelligent and they are very very knowledgeable and informed!!!

I am really really happy . I did not expect to match. No body was expecting me to!!

I think that observership are a plus but are not as helpful as residency even outside of the US. I don't recommend that you not have a USCE over having a residency in your country. But if you are not doing anything anyway, better get into that residency in your country.

First they'll know that you are truely interested in that specialty. Then you will have some experience and talk about it in the interviews. And you have a plan B if it doesn't work out in the US. It is not bad also to have some kind of financial support! It will give you some kind of confidence. I was so lucky to finish my step 1 and CK 8 days before starting residency, only CS was left..

I was asked to share the template of the emails I sent to the programs to figure out who is IMG friendly. I thought I can share it with everybody.. Variables are in red

Subject: Residency application minimal requirements for IMGs

According to the FREIDA website, you at (name of institution) in (name of city/state) are accepting residency applications for the 2012 match. I am interested in your (Pediatrics) program and I would very much like to apply to it.

I am an international medical graduate, I passed step 1 and CK from the first attempt with 99/238 and 92/224 scores respectively and the CS from the second attempt. I have no previous clinical experience inside the US, though I am currently enrolled in a pediatric residency program in my country, and I'm going to do a month of observership in Rheumatology in the University of Indiana in Nov. Unfortunately, you didn't mention anything about application requirements or filters such as years since graduation or score limits in your website. I'm clinging to any chance to get accepted at your program, so could you please tell me if I can apply with these scores? or can you send me your application requirements?

Thank you for your time and effort, looking forwards to hearing from you..

Best regards

Dr Talal Seddik

Graduated from Cairo University... Went to a ministry of health program "Aleppo Children's hospital". The idea of being in a pediatric program itself is what is important, it shows that this is your interest.
As for Syria in general I couldn't get into a university hospital because if you did not graduate from Syria, you'll have to pay money to get there. How ironic!

My year of graduation is complicated in Cairo. It was either 2008 or 2009. I chose 2009! It is after the compulsatory internship

The subscription was a contest 2 years ago in this forum. Now they have one for USMLE Consult

Thanks for your sharing.

I had been a pediatrician in my home country for 11 years, 6 years research here.

failed CS once, step1 240, CK 249

GC holder, will do OB for 6-10 months, several publications, but only one first author.

I am wondering my chance to get into a pediatric program in the next 2 years.

Would you please give me some suggestion?

I think your credentials are amazing as they are!! They are much better than mine. You just need to find somewhere to take old grads.. You can email the programs you are interested in. Or you can apply in the same program where you are going to have the observership. I am sure over more than 6 months you'll have many contacts there.

Good luck

One well known thing is that you have to concentrate on the high yeild information. Things that come in USMlE exams so often. Unfortunately prestep series do not contain high yeild info.
Step 3 is good to apply for H-1 visa which is better than J-1. A few programs do not give J-1 but they give H-1. This is not the rule though. Otherwise I'd say that step 3 is not that much of a help, but I'm not sure though.
Yes you get paid. If you studied in Syrian Uni, you get paid in Uni hospitals and ministry of health hospitals. If you study outside, you only get paid for ministry of health hospitals, if you wanna join uni hospitals you pay for them. Either way, if you get paid, the sallary is $200 per month!!!!!

In Mexico the average salary for a resident is about $850.

I am about to start the whole applying process for the USMLE, I already did a residency in Mexico, I am a Nephrologist (finished last year). I honestly don't have lots of hope, but I am trying anyway.

Anyway, congratulations!

Thank-you for sharing your story with us.

I myself, was trying to decide whether I should wait to complete my clinical years and take STEP 2 or go ahead and sit for STEP 1 now. I recently decided that doing STEP 1 first was the best choice, and reading your post confirmed my decision.

Congratulations on finally matching. Reading about your journey, gave me hope, as a future IMG and US resident applicant!

Good Luck
