Default Importance of publication

Hey folks, how're u doin?
Id like to ask smthg regarding match chances...
I just received my step 1 score, better than i hoped for, 265. Lets say i can keep it in CK get a first pass CS, 3 mo clerkships, decent LORS and Step3. I'll apply as a recent grad as well. Do you guys think having weak research background will compromise me in getting into a mid-higher tier U based community program or University program? Research background at my med school is almost nonexistent and i'm afraid it might hurt my application.
Any considerations would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance and good luck for the ones in match season

Depends where you will do a clerkship. If this will be university hospital and they will write smth along the lines of '' the best student we ever worked with'' you will easily match at low/mid-tier univ program ( whatever word tier means).
Research is mainly helpful due to connections that you make. Research by itself is not a big deal, unless you've published in Cell/nature/NEJM/JAMA, etc.. as a 1st author. Ofc, research is a huge deal if you're applying for phys- scientist track.

Hi there,
Best of luck this time. You mind sharing your stats? Do you think it's additional publications that got your more interviews this season? I suspect USCE may be key factor.

Connection is big time and USCE is 2nd for IM, publications dont help you that much, trust me, I had 1st author paper in JACC!
but for patho, neuro and ... it might be a different story

Hey
i am almost at your position as you were last year. I have had 3 ivs only and quite worried about being matched. Can you please share how did manage >7months usce? was it observership or externship? right now I am doing an observership at an outpatient clinic. Not sure how much it would be helpful for usce.

Don't worry, you never know... there are real ppl who matched with 1 IV only
I got 1st through a company named AmeriClerkships (I don't recommend it) and the others through friends and other ppl. each will cost you about 1-2k but wait till match and contact me later if you were still in need

Thanks mahdi82! With 7 interviews, I hope you match.

I'm getting conflicting advice from various sources on what to do to improve chances in case of God forbid no match.

I hear people saying go into research to improve the CV and it will make for a better candidate for next attempt at residency.

If I have already done the observership and gotten the LORs out of them, does working at a clinic under a physician counts more than say being engaged in research at a big name hospital.

Lat but not least, haven't taken step 3 but hoping that IA I match so I simply pass the Step 3 and not worry about scoring high as that's always an unknown. If I end up applying for second time and decide to take Step 3, then I would need to make sure that I score well.

Still not sure if I can just hold off on taking Step 3 and instead look for research opportunities, volunteer, or clinical experience..

I have seen one applicant with 4 IVs (average package with few months USCE) and did not match. Then he did externship in a private (through personal connection) and got 10+ IVs this year. So I think USCE really matters. I do not think research matters even any for most LOW-MID TITER COMMUNITY program

If I already have LORs by doing observership in a hospital, is doing more obervership or externship better than say going into research? I'm hesitant to comit to doing step 3 because what if I don't score well, it will hurt me rather than help. My understanding is that step 3 is not a deal breaker per se only if you score low.

Folks,
I would appreciate your thoughts on what to do if a person doesn't match? What's the best strategy in terms of improving once chances next year?
