Help How important is externship/ observasion for matiching pathology

Hi guys, how are you doing today

I have not graduated , not have taken any of those tests. My dream is to match in pathology department. I have one first author publication, that is all I have so far.

The thing is I was not born in a rich family and the school rule does not allow us to take externship in another country before graduation. Besides I cannot afford to live in America without income, as I said, sadly not everyone was born in rich family.

I did some search and ppl saying externship/ observation is so so so important for matching. I am seriously wondering is there any chance I can match to pathology without that? Or should I just give up and toss my dream away?

Any advice is appreciated, I am desperate now, nothing is easy for poor ppl.

I think it would help a lot to do at least monthly observership, but if not just get a get good scores and demonstrate ties to pathology (like doing pathology residency in your country). I think it is definitely possible to match without observ, but you can do it when you come for usmle step 2 cs and it would help you to get more interviews in better programs.

Are you from the subcontinent? I would recommend doing your housejob in pathology and getting some research in. It would certainly brighten your chances and help you with your income as well.

And remember, these opportunities are like investments. Pay now for a better reward later. Just make sure you make it worthwhile.

Default Re:

I agree with Kaducey and fiestar. While no exact formula exists, having U.S. clinical experience increases your chances for success. I cannot overemphasize the importance of what fiestar wrote: "these opportunities are like investments." I have had applicants express regret that they did not invest in preparing their documents, improve their interview techniques, or obtain more U.S. clinical experience, but I have never had one state that they regretted making an investment in their future. Best of luck and I hope you achieve your dream!
