Default is 1 year volunteering in my home country considered a gap ?

Hi. I am an IMG. I graduated in June 2015. I have a question regarding gap years.
so if someone volunteers as a doctor in a hospital in his home country for 1 year , is this considered a gap year ? is it harmful to my chances of getting matched in residency program?

Thank you, wish you luck all.

Cannot you call it "internship", which sounds more formal, rather than "volunteer"?

Anyway, I don't think it will hurt you.

This is a clinical experience which is always good on your CV. It depends on you and how you want to cite in your CV. Better to put it as a working experience than a volunteer experience because one year is a lot.
