Default General Surgery chances for IMGs

I am an IMG,preparing for my step1.i am very much interested in surgery since my childhood.but i have heard that its very difficult for IMGs to match in general surgery, they need to keep on trying everyyear and so on.but after seeing the match data published by ECFMG i became hopefull, though i am still confused.
Could anyone please tell me the practical circumstances about the chances of an IMG matching in grneral surgery!! Please do help.thankyou.

its not easy. i only got 3 surgery programs on my rank list this year. I have 230s and 240s. get good scores on the USMLEs (>250) and you will get interviews. just have a contingency plan at the end of it if things dont work out

im a US citizen graduated from a caribbean school so probably not your best example. I had US rotations and 3 surgery recommendations.

if you are still in medical school try to do surgery elective. some of the big centers offer to internaitonal graduates. if you have already graduated then you are only eligible for observerships. im not sure of the value of an observership. something is better than nothing in my opinion.

successful IMG surgery applicants I have come across had insane scores (255+) and were well published. many of them spent 1 year in a lab.

Yeah general surgery is tough for IMG... No surgery residency programs have opened since 2001 someone was telling me

The good news is there are so many pre lim surgery programs u can get into and then make contacts to get into surgery for the next year
