Default Long gap & Match

I have been in US for more than 6 years, been going research at lab. Just got my green card last year and started preparing for the USMLE.

Recently I heard that I can get a match even if I got high score in the test because I have a long gap since last time I worked at clinical.

I am now preparing to get to a RN program too, in case the board thing failed.

Just very frustrated, dont know how to contribute my time to these two things, anyone here know someone like me but still get a match?

Please don't lie to me, no matter what you guys say, I won't give up trying to be a doctor, just want to know the chance so I can plan my future better.

Thanks so much to everyone would reply me.

Hey fightingyeah,

have you seen the official charting outcomes published by ECFMG yet?

Charting outcomes

This shows on page 11 that the mean YOG for matched non-US IMGs was 4.7 years, for unmatched it was 7.5.

This honestly means that your chances to match are lower compared to those whose YOG is lower. I personally know some programs which will filter your application because there's more than 5 years since your graduation, however I don't know how many programs act in this way.

Your time doing research is great if you have significant publications under your belt. Some programs overlook ALL the red flags if you have first authorships in prestigious/top journals. Do you have connection over your research lab? Do they offer residency spots at the place where you did research? I met one doctor, YOG was above 5 years, and he unofficially got offered a residency spot if he applies to their program and ranks them highly, simply because they loved him as a researcher.

Thanks so much, I do have publications although they are not on very good journals. And I don't think my lad has any clinical connections.

I will focus more on the nurse program then.
