Surgery Surgical Residencies for IMGs!

Hi there,

I ve recently been told that IMGs can easily get an internal medicine residency or peadiatrics for that matter, but they say its hard to get a surgical speciality such as general surgery, orthopedics, or neurosurgery ..
Is that true, especially for IMGs ?

Also, they told me even if an IMG does manage to get into a surgery residency, IMGs wdnt be given an opportunity to develop, because of the so called 'pyramidal system'.. and that they wdnt be given full responsibility under any circumstances and wd only be allowed to assist other surgeons who are US citizens ?

Does anyone know abt this in more detail ?

Info Correct and Incorrect

The first of what they told you is correct. It's very difficult to get into "high income" specialties such as surgery or surgical sub-specialties. Simply because all AMGs are after this which makes the task very difficult for IMGs.

However, the second part of what they told you is not correct. Once you are in a specialty then you'll climb your way up to the top if you do well. The most famous surgeons and highly specialized doctors here in USA were in fact IMGs and not AMGs, I know cardiosurgrons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and others who are IMGs and now very prominent in American medical society.

American people are lovely people, they don't care what's your background. All they care about is how good you are in your job.

I'm not sure where your at, but where I"m from most are IMGs in surgical. Why? Because not a lot of people want to spend 5 years making min wage.

so imho, sugery is getting easier to get into. You have to be willing to move to a small community
