Star Call upon Congress to increase the number of Residency Slots for US Citizen & resident IMGs

Our request, Mr. President, is to call upon Congress to pass a legislation that would effectively increase the number of Medicare-funded GME residency slots. Those slots should also cover US citizen and Permanent Resident International Medical Graduates (IMGs) . A recommended number is 21,000, based on a peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). That would not only help solve the physician shortage we now face in our nation and benefit the fast growing patient population, it would also pave the way for many US IMGs who have been denied a contributing role in this country to start doing what they were trained to do: saving lives. At the same time, these US IMGs would be able to care for their family and live their lives with dignity. Thank you.

Here is the link http://wh.gov/QL0
This is gonna help each and every one of us. This campaign is moving very slow. We need to reach that number by 11 May so that next year we have increase in the residency spots. Just few days left.

Please ask your friends to sign on this petition.

All The Best

The petition is specifically asking to help US citizens and Green Card IMGs, not any IMG.

How would they do that? They have to then discriminate against non-US IMGs.

Congress legislators will say, OK " we can ban non-US IMGs from the NRMP match and the remaining slots would be enough for the US AMGs and US IMGs.

If I were to be a non-US IMG I wouldn't sign this petition.

While what you said makes sense but I don't think the Congress would do that in response to a petition!
Also, there's another "more important" component of the pledge, it's not only about US IMGs, it's about the doctors shortage in general, something very urgent and has to be addressed by the Congress.
The petition could have been better worded and could have got more responses, I think, if it would have just asked for increasing the number of slots without mentioning US or Green Card IMGs.
Congress should think of a way to meet the increasing demands for physicians and if they are smart they should know that they can do that by actually giving more room for IMGs to come in.
So this petition is not entirely against non-US IMGs.

Get your facts right. US is facing a shortage of doctors and discussions are already under the process to increase the slots. If they are going to increase the positions its everyone of us not particularly GC holders and US citizen who are going to benefit. Reaching 25000 signatures will make it a solid point to the congress to think about it seriously
Please dont make it a useless thread by giving immature comments.

I am an AMG but I totally sympathize with IMGs, in fact my wife is a US IMG. But, the Congress would not take an issue seriously unless of it is of national interest.
They are criticizing Obama for outsourcing Green jobs! How would they pass a legislation that would create jobs for Indians and Chinese (the two economies threatening to put US behind!).
I agree with you, the petition should have focused on the "doctors shortage" without mentioning US IMGs.

I guess people dont realize that signing a petition going to congress as a non-resident/non-citizen doesnt make much sense. Its like me trying to cast a vote in the spanish election.
