I do not think the place actually matter. What really matters are three things:

1- What type of research you are going to do? is it something that is related to your residency of choice and long term goal? if you are doing a research for example on the effect of garlic poison on black rats but your residency of choice is psychiatry, it really does not make any sense. But if your research for example is on MRI imaging data on Alzheimer patients and your residency of choice is Neurology... now you have a story that makes sense.

2- Your research mentor, this is very important. Your mentor should know that you want to apply to residency, and should be really familiar with the whole process. PhD scientists are not familiar with this process, so the mentor better to be a physician who did his training in the US and know what it takes to get into residency here. Even better if the mentor mentored residency applicants in the past.

3- Clinical experience during research. Scientific research and scholarly activity are important and adds to your profile when you apply to residency. But PDs will be really really concerned about your clinical skills and clinical work, engagement into clinical activities in your research is vital, and your letters of recommendation should comment and reflect on that during the application process.

I believe the three important factors listed above can guide you which university you should do your research in.

Good luck.
