Default Howard University Hospital matched for 2016, Internal Medicine, Pls Gather Here!!

I am an Img, matched in internal medicine categorical. Those who matched please gather here and let's discuss our options. It starts from July and we will have to be there at the end of June. Don't know about housing options and I will have to move from west coast.Heard living near the hospital is costly.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi Guys,

Not sure if you had IV's at good places...I think u should have based on your scores. Anyway what's done is done..
It's one of those bad places with the patient count reducing...(moving to Metrohealth).

Teaching is very bad..So make sure you try to do it by yourself..Work very hard right from Day 1.

The place is too costly...Salary is on the lower side 46k.

Also, no fellowships for IMG's (only for African Americans).

I am not writing this to let you down..
Now it;s in your hands to learn as much as you can from your side as you dont get any help from attendings.

All this is based on one of my friend who is a resident there.

Jeez!
everyone has their own subjective feeling about how a residency program is or isn't. they just matched for god's sake, so maybe let them decide how they feel about the program when they start the residency.
situation is not as it was few years before where people with scores above 230 matched into excellent programs. Unless you are a genius and score above 260s, that's almost impossible now a days unless you have good connections! Its an accomplishment to go through everything and still match in the first place.

Thanks for your input
I know it would be challenging to match at Howard
it wasn't my first choice but after all I'm thankful that I'm one of those who matched
By the way I have decent scores 243/256/Cs pass all first attempt
The competition is growing fiercer every year

In fact even I got an IV from them and a good IV feedback from the resident.
But bad teaching and low pay in DC area and no fellowships made me rank it at 9 for me...

Anyway since u matched, I can only advice you to work hard...

Default Howard is a great place

I have experienced Howard for both research and 1 year Prelim and I can state is a jewel of all University programs.

All these people who say other wise have no idea.

In house fellowship programs, and no is not for Africans, there is many Arabs and Indians in GI and Cardio and Orthopedic Surgery.

In fact top GI, Cardio and Pulm chief fellows will be Indian, Pakistani and Irani by next year.

Howard is one of the best places you can train.

Good for all who matched.

This is largely nonsense. The PGY1 salary is 49K, and yes, DC is very expensive, but you can live in parts of Maryland close to DC or Northern Virginia which are relatively cheaper areas. It's still expensive, however.

The teaching is generally decent. I am a Howard graduate in the prelim program going for an advanced specialty (ophtho, rads, anesthesia, etc). Also a god number of IMG fellows. Howard is one of the few institutions that is open to IMGs. And no matter what, your IMG status will always haunt you unless you have other attributes that mitigate this 'stigma'.

The program is also humane. I had the option of doing my prelim year at other more prestigious places, but I wanted to avoid malignancy as much as I could.

The only statement with some veracity is the decreased patient volume, but I don't think I need to see COPD 50 times before I know how to manage it.
