Default change J1 visa catogrey

Hello,

I am now on "J1 research" visa which will expire on April 30th. This visa is sponsored by a university and not the ECFMG.

Now I need to apply for J1 clinical visa. I will go back to my country and apply from there. The question is do I need to wait for my current J1 research visa to end on April 30th and then apply for J1 clinical visa? or I can apply for J1 clinical visa while I am still holding my J1 research visa?

Thanks

No. From what I understand, once your J1 research visa ends on April 30th you are no longer eligible to apply for change of status to J1 alien physician (both dates on I 94 and DS 2019 on j1 research visa has to be valid). Also if your current j1 visa has the 2 year HRR rule, you cannot apply for another J visa till u get a waiver or complete the 2 year rule; only possible route is change of status to j1 alien physician (you may want to clarify this though). You can apply for change of status while you are in US as well.

2 years rule apply only if you want to change from J1 visa to immigrant visa.

Yes. But as far as I know, you cannot apply for J1 clinical without completing 2 year rule for j1 research visa (once the visa expires); u can only apply for change of status from j1 research to clinical before the research visa expires

I do not think so.

Look at this information form the US J1 visa government website:

Can I participate in another J1 program after finishing my current program?

Your current J-1 visa is ONLY applicable for your current J-1 exchange program and under your current program sponsor. Upon completion of your current J-1 program, you are expected to depart the United States.

If you intend to pursue a 2nd J-1 exchange program (in a different category and with a different J-1 sponsor), you will need to apply for a new J-1 visa for your new exchange program and new J-1 sponsor in order to reenter the U.S. for the 2nd program.
