Question Neurology residency vs Neurology fellowship...

Which one is better choice for average IMGs (also need visa) & also easier? And are there huge differences between these two? I mean the situation in USA after each pathway?
1) Going through categorical neurology residency program
2) Completing IM residency first and then going for neurology sub-specialization.

I dont know the technical stuff much. but being an img i believe we should be very flexible and open. i dont think there is much difference between the two. its just that u would not need to find a fellowship placement after you complete residency with categorial neurology program. But if we just apply to such programs only, i think high chances of remaining unmatched.

acccording to scores and visa requirement i think both are similar as far as i know about imgs who have matched. i dont know much about post-residency situation in US for both of them but i dont believe there would be significant difference.

There's no neurology fellowship after IM residency.

Neurology, unlike (Cardiology, GI, Nephro, ...etc), is a residency, it's not a fellowship.

It's 4 years residency where you do 1 yr IM then 3 yrs Neuro.

The reason why neurology is so different from other IM subspecialties is probably due to historic links to psychiatry. Also, the practice set up of neurologist does not really need that much IM knowledge and therefore no need for 3 years IM, just one year enough. While if you are a cardiologist or GI or nephrologist ..etc you really need 3 years of IM training.

By the way, this also applies to Peds Neurology.
