Default How to ask for LoR

Hey everyone,

I have reading the info on forums and AAMC website and was a bit confused on how to ask and submit LoRs.

1) Can I (medical student) upload LoRs that are written and signed by the attending?
2) If not should I ask them for a letter immediately after my rotation in their field or is it better to ask when I submit my applications? (I am currently 3rd year student and will by applying next year).

I would appreciate if someone could help me understand this process.

Thanks

Personally, I feel the best time to ask for a letter is a day or a couple of days before the end of your rotation. Just ask the attending for it and make sure you discuss what he is going to write in the letter. And then you can ask him to save the letter in his computer, so that he can upload it when you apply. A waived letter is better than an unwaived letter, I feel.

But if the attending decides to give you the letter right away, you can upload it yourself when you apply.

1. You can upload the LORs yourself, but it looks better to waive your right to see them and have the person upload it themselves on your LOR portal using your Letter Request Form/ Letter ID.
2. Ask for the LOR ASAP. It is best to give them 1-2 months notice before you will need the LOR so they have enough time to create a strong, personalized letter.
