Default Soon complete final year of Med school, IMG dreaming of a match into orthopaedics over the next couple of years.(~2019 match)

Hey guys!

I am a final year Med student from India and will be giving my finals this July. Since the system here doesn't really train us with competitive exams in mind, I haven't taken any of the steps so far neither have I done any clinical rotations in the USA yet. Although I have picked up quiet a lot of information regarding the usmle over last couple of months through seniors and a cousin of mine who's a doctor in the USA.

After talking to a lot of people who have either already been matched or the ones that are giving their exams, I have come to realise that the general consensus among the usmle aspirants here in India is that as an IMG you have to move forward with only about 4 residencies in mind I.e. Internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry and family medicine. Now, after almost spending about 5 years in med school and rotating in various departments I have come understand that my interest in Orthopaedics surpasses all the other fields. It is a subject that I am naturally good at. I find myself learning and studying new things even when I am out on a vacation. And I have constantly been way ahead of my classmates in terms of both clinics and on paper when it comes to Ortho. So basically that's how much I like this subject.

Sadly though I have been told by most of my seniors that if that's how adamant I am about doing Ortho I should probably look somewhere else because an IMG matching into the same is close to impossible. I haven't received a single positive response yet. Now I know people who have let go of their true interests for the sake of improving their chances of getting a match and pursuing a medical career in the USA but I really don't want to go down that path.

So coming to my question,

1)what are the chances of an IMG matching into Orthopaedics realistically speaking? (It would be great if someone could post a link or something with statistics from the previous matches)

2) If their is a decent amount of chance, what kind of a game plan would you suggest for someone in my position who's starting from scratch? (Clerkships, research etc)

3) What step 1 and 2 score should I be looking at?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1) Very low
2)Do everything ortho related... At least 3 months of clerkship in great university. At least 6 months of world-class research in ortho (better if in US) with at least 1 killer paper
3) You should be looking at double 260's at least. Anything under 250's and you won't stand a chance

With all these done, you will have a fair enough chance but still your odds to go unmatched in Ortho is still substantitally high.
