Is it possible to finish step 3 preparation in 4-5 weeks with a goal of above 235 score?

Default LOR query

Hi
I was confused about how I should pick my LORs
I have 3 US letters ( from an observership, elective and externship each)
and 2 from India.
I am expecting one/two good US LORs in October from an externship in Sep-Oct.

Do I select 4 LORs (from those I already have) for now ?

I would like to send 4 now and then send two recent (waived) LORs in October later.

What do you think would be my best bet here?

Thank you.

Do you mean you want to send all 4 lors to each program or just use the 4 lors you have to all programs, send 2 now and the 2 you would get in October later?

I meant that I would want to send 4 LORs to all programs now , then send two more
I called up ERAS for that, they say there is no way to do so.

The US LORs I have with me are from an observership in a university program (done in September 2015),Externship in a private clinic and non-university affiiliated hospital(April 2015), Elective in an IVY league university (May 2012)and two from India-my medical school

I do not want to leave empty slots and wait till October to upload recent LORs. Looks like I could but that doesnt make sense to me. What do you think?

Any tips as to how I can make the best of those two recent LORs?

Thank you Saxo for all your help. God bless you

Yeah. The maximum LoRs that we can send to each program are 4 (though people usually say programs read only 3 or even less). I would use more US letters compared to home country lors as they certainly carry more weight. Like others have said above, people usually go for 3 US and 1 home lor (especially if you have a well written and strong home letter).
Also, October might be too late to send letters as programs usually start reviewing applications a week or two after submission and its best to send a complete application rather than sending 2 now and 2 later.

Would it be a good idea to ask for written copies of those LORs and carry it with me for interviews?
I understand this will not be as effective as having waived LORs .

Yep. In addition to being unwaived, programs will trust lors that have already been evaluated by ERAS before being released. If you really want to use them and can get them by the first week of October, you could take the risk if you feel that would increase your chances. But if you get them any later than 2nd week of October, don't think it's a good idea to send the letters that late and ask for each program to look at your updated application.

Sorry I didnt make myself clear.
I was thinking of these options:

Choice 1: Upload 3 US + 1 India (from the chair of community medicine)
& carry paper copies of the recent US LORs with me

Choice 2: Upload 3 US, upload fourth US LOR in Oct first week & carry paper copies of Indian LORs with me

Carrying lors with you for interviews does not sound right to me and I think programs will have a hard time trusting unwaived letters that have not been evaluated by ECFMG and released by ERAS. Also, I don't think it would look good in an interview if you say I managed to get these letters from my recent experience and hand over the lors.
Other than that, both options seem fine. Personally, I would probably have done choice 2 unless I had an excellent home lor. I am using 4 US letters for all programs except those which specifically state they need a home letter from department chair as my home lor is worthless. But if you have a well written home lor, then choice 1 also seems fine. As you are planning to use the 3 US lors you have, guess you have to decide if you want to send the 1 US lor from your recent experience a little later rather than sending the home lor now.

What about applying a couple of days later than September 15th? My LoRs still have to be loaded as I was unable to ask for them before a couple of weeks ago and I think I will not have them confirmed for September 15th. Would applying only a couple of days later hurt my chances of interview?

Don't think so. Applying 4-7 days after 15th is unlikely to make a difference as programs start the reviewing usually after a week.

Default Apply late??

Hi guys
I need urgent help pleeeeaaase.

I have failed step 2K in july and I haven't done it again yet.

I passed my step 1 and cs first attempt with high performance. I DID 5M OSCE+ 1 PUBLICATION, 3 US LOR, doing RESEARCH now.
if I wait to take the step 2 again in Oct and apply later, do i still have the chance for reviewing my application by then?

A lot of this depends upon your exact position , career goals and aspiration...it is difficult for someone to answer the question if you should apply or not...the only thing I can say is to focus on ck...

Is a 6 month gap after graduation (from Feb to Sept) a red flag? I tried to get some sort of clinical experience but was without luck.

Thank you. I know that my home country LOR is great but I cannot compare it with the US letters as I have no clue what they are like. I posted the same query on another forum, someone posted that Indian LORs have no value It was a harsh comment IMO although I have heard a few people say that to me. On the contrary, a Peds PD once told me that they value foreign LORs too.

And those programs who require a letter from the chair are usually refering to AMGs and their American chair person, I may be wrong, you can check this elsewhere, may be the program will be able to tell you what they prefer in case of IMGs.

Coming to my question:
Do I send three letters now and make an empty slot for the fourth one when I apply & have my preceptor upload a letter in October
or
Simply send 3 letters and send the fourth letter in October, no slot this time.

Does it make a difference to the program people? does either option make it easier(likely) for them to view my fourth letter

I just called up ECFMG and they said its pretty much the same, but she also said she wasnt very sure about it.

I did not understand your question. What do you mean by "make an empty slot for a fourth one"? If you send 3 letters now, you will have the chance to send one in October (you might have to ask programs to look at your updated application again).

Yes, in case you dont have a letter yet but you are expecting it, you can add that letter (slot) under your LOR tab-just like you do for every letter before the author uploads it and then assign it to programs. And when the author uploads it , it will be automatically updated. Now I am not sure where I read this, but I will confirm with ECFMG again and let you know.

Default Number of programs

I was wondering what is a safe number when applying for a single specialty?
I am an IMG, not going to complain about 'scutwork'/'malignancy' (first world problems ), so my main aim would be to Match at least. I would obviously want a good program but I want to make sure I apply to the most IMG friendly programs as a safety net and to some good programs too.
I was planning to go for 150 but a (matched ) friend said more is good
My profile is average . I have a list of 120 programs so far.

You mean adding lors. ya you can definitely do that. You can add as many letters as you like in the lors tab but you send only 4

IMG: Visa needed.
Step 1: 251; first attempt
CS: First Pass
CK: score should be out this wednesday (hopefully between 255 and 265)
Grades: Valedictorian, rank 1st/86
USCE: 2 month observerships at big university hospitals
Date of graduation: 2015. Currently second year resident in Internal Medicine back home.
EC: 2 published papers (3rd and 4th author). 2 oral presentations (1st spot young investigator award in regional meeting), 1 poster. Active member in students' committee, mutliple volunteerism experiences.
LORs: 4 of them (2 US LORs from big university hospital , 2: from home internal medicine program director and nephrology head of department)

WAMC of getting into a university program (IM)?
What programs should I realistically aim for? Can you please provide me with a short list?
Thank you

Nice profile!

Damn..graduted medical school in 2015, already a second year resident and you still managed to find time and get 2 US LORs from university hospitals. Is your residency program director comfortable writing a letter while you leave the program midway? You should have no problems matching.

Hey
Actually it's a 2 year internal medicine program. I'll be done with it and yes our program director loves me and won't stand in my way.
My question is what are my chances of matching at a uni program?
What programs should I be aiming for?
A small list would be cool.
Thanks

Looks like we have kind of a similar profile. When you say you need J1, have you decided not to give step 3?

Hey vrao
Actually it's a 2 year internal medicine program. I'll be done with it and yes our program director loves me and won't stand in my way.
My question is what are my chances of matching at a uni program?
What programs should I be aiming for?
A small list would be cool.
Thanks

Hey saxo
ya our profile is quite similar. So far i dont intend to write step 3. Most of my seniors have advised me against it. There is always a risk with giving another one of the USMLE exams.

let me know whats your view on it. how many programs are you thinking of applying to?

I agree. I have been thinking about it for the last week but I am no where near confident in giving step 3 during the interview season. It would be terrible to have average to above-average scores and perform poorly on step 3. That being said, getting done with step 3 does have its advantages.
I have applied to 214 programs. Around 40 university based and rest community and community affiliated.

Need a visa.
I have 160 programs so far, will make it 200 today. Is that enough?

I have added most IMG friendly programs in the most IMG friendly states and others .

Who knows
150 is a good number but if you can afford it I would probably apply to few more places that are IMG friendly. Just my opinion.

Default ABOUT current visa

Hi friends, i am filling my MyERAS application.

I have a doubt?

In Personal Information column, Under the current visa what should we choose if we have B1/B2 visa.

There is no option to select b1/b2, should we go with OTHER option????

Thank you.

Question

I have been waiting for my third US LOR to be released, it seems its taking longer than the usual 1-2 days.

What is my best option:
1)Send my application today with two letters and upload the third one whenever its available,
2)Wait for the third one to be available and then send the complete application.
3) Use my Indian LOR as a third LOR and send the applications today, the only issue with this is that I will have only one slot left to upload a US LOR when I am expecting three of them. Plus I am unsure as to how much an Indian LOR is valued by them.

there are many img friendly uni programs ..so chances are not bad...but if you want real good programs (and I am not talking of Harvard,UPenn which are always out of reach ,but programs like UTSW, UAB birmingham which take some imgs but those with real good research)... than it depends upon your US-LORs and research and contacts....

Dude. You are literally spamming the thread with multiple similar posts
Relax! You have scores people would kill for and excellent profile. You'll probably get tons of invites from decent university programs.

My profile:

Step 1 - 231
Step 2 CK - 236
Step 2 CS - Pass
Step 3 - 229
All passed on first attempts.

Externship - 6 months total
Observership - 5 months total (also, one 1 month in Canada)
Research - 5 months total with one publication (also, currently researching at a reputable University hospital in Canada)

YoG - 2011

My main problem is the YoG. I have applied twice but unfortunately could not match.

on your previous attempts YOG was certainly not a problem...it may be a problem on this one depending upon when exactly you graduated..but even more than YOG your gap would be something you might want to explain....if you got a lot of interviews on your previous attempt but still remained unmatched ,you might want to work on that...

I submitted my application couple of hours ago. Right now, as I was going through my application, I made a terrible mistake by copy pasting one paragraph twice from Microsoft Word. Can I re-edit my personal statement without others letting know as hospitals don't have access to ERAS now?

Default Long time between YOG

This a problem a lot of our clients face. What if I graduated medical school more than 3 years ago? It's a challenge. No question. Auto-filters will eliminate most candidates even if their sporting a 250+ on Step 1, Step 2CK. It's easy to do so with a simple click.

How do we overcome it?

A few tips.

1) Do observerships in programs where they have a history of taking IMGs. This allows you to demonstrate clinical skills in an environment that may welcome your application.

If this is not possible, I am surprised by the low number of clients that reach out to their supervisors and simply ask via email:
"Hi Dr. XYZ, I really enjoyed working with you in September. It truly was formative. I am applying in Internal Medicine this year, and I'm wondering if you could send a short note on my behalf to any contacts at <insert program>, <insert program>, and <insert program>."

2) I recommend 100% that in the personal statement that candidates address the time between graduation. It's important to be specific and clear. The main worry from a program director is that someone who graduated a long time ago is clinically rusty. In the essay, candidates have to explain why this is not the case. With clinical observerships, and continued reading of the medical literature, the candidate has stayed up to date.

You cannot update the PS after submitting the application. But you can add a new PS in ERAS and assign the new PS to all programs.

From the ERAS User Guide:

-Personal Statements can be edited at any point during the application season-
even when assigned to programs that have been applied to.
- Personal Statements that have been edited will be reflected on the programs’ side
by an updated status containing the date of the updated version but programs
are not guaranteed to view or review updated versions of Personal Statements.

It's too early for programs to review applications. People from last year's thread started getting calls from around 21st.

Default Step 3 before the match

Hey everyone, like some of you guys I am considering taking STEP3 during the interview period.

However, I read on the FSMB website ( https://www.fsmb.org/licensure/usmle...state_specific ) that ALL U.S states require IMG’s to successfully finish a minimum of 1year ACGME training (=internship year) to be eligible for “INITIAL MEDICAL LICENSURE”.
Are these requirements apply to be eligible for taking the step3 test?

Before I apply, I want to be sure I am not missing anything as I understand that many of you guys already toke the exam even before applying to residency / participate in the match.

Thanks and good luck

There is no such requirement for step 3. All you need to register is to be ECGMG certified

Hi, thank you for your response. You sound confident

Did you happen to take the exam lately (assumingly before residency)? And if so, where?

By the way, this is a quote from the USMLE 2017 bulletin:
“ IMPOR TANT: The USMLE program recommends that, for Step 3 eligibility, applicants should have completed, or be near completion of, at least one postgraduate training year in a US-accredited graduate medical education program that meets state board licensing requirements”.

Yes, I took it in Alabama on Aug 22-23. And no, I'm not a resident
But I have a few years of home home country experience
