I am in.

Please try to include the scores in your signature, like I did.

I will post the general guide on how to go about the match, like token, timelines, and start a Google doc for all the applicants.

If anyone has a prepared list of programs, please share.

I will update the google doc file in a while, and include it in my signature. Please all the applicants do the same.

GoodLuck all!

This is the guide for match from previous year thread, thank you MishkaMd for such a well written guide.

Here are the steps to getting your MyERAS ready for the Match:
  1. Token - Starting June 23rd, 2016 go to ECFMG website, go to your OASIS and click ERAS support section at left hand bottom and choose to buy a Residency Token. The token is valid for the match year.
  2. AAMC - After purchasing the Token you will get a special serial number. Go to AAMC website and register it. This will give you access to MyERAS profile in order to begin updating your profile with information and documents for the upcoming match.
  3. Filling out your ERAS profile
    • You will be prompted to fill in some general information at first, such as your school, date of graduation, whether you require visa or not and etc.
    • Within that same application you will also fill out your CV by adding experiences and writing how many hours you have done and small descriptions of what you have done during that time.
    • N.B. Work experience is everything that was a rotation, observership, clinical teaching. Volunteer experience is pretty much everything else (clubs, being part of societies, workshops, etc). There will also be a separate section for research.
  4. Document Upload
    • Letters of Recommendation (MyERAS). This is about generating PDF’s to send to those who will write them and upload on your behalf. If you are an IMG and have non-waived letters, upload them via OASIS. You have two choices: waived or non-waived. Non-waived letters are simply uploaded by you. “Waived” letter means that you don’t get to see the letter and it is uploaded by the person who is recommending you. These letters are considered much stronger.
    • Starting last year, AAMC introduced the concept of waived letters being submitted online via a secure network. The process works as such: you go on your MyERAS profile and click on the documents section. There you carry out a request for a letter of recommendation but filling out the name of the person who is recommending you and their position. After you click below tp authorize the generation of PDF file. This file contains instructions for the letter write on how to upload the letter succesfully on your behalf. Send this PDF to your letter write and have them follow the steps. As a suggestion, these letters may take up to two weeks to process, so get them done early! You will be able to check if they have en uploaded by checking your ERAS section in OASIS.
    • Other documents (upload via OASIS in the ERAS section) -They are you LOR’s, your transcripts, your CV, your passport photograph, your personal statement and MSPE
    • If you are an IMG, generally MPSE is uploaded by you. If you are an AMG, the school will upload them on your behalf. MSPE’s are released after October 1st, 2016.
  5. Search and Select your programs by Clicking on “Programs” Tab.
    • You can search them by AAMC or NRMP ID or even by location. You should have a good idea of where you want to apply to by now.
    • The best resource for research is FREIDA. Go to FREIDA, and set your own filters. After selecting the programs, try visiting their website to find out any requirements which may cost you an automatic disqualification from the game. Pay close attention to programs that don’t sponsor visas.
    • Remember, It is always best to check their websites and request any addition information first hand, then to trust lists people created years ago. Try to do this step before July, as it will save you lots of time!

  6. Click on “Programs” tab and click on each program and check boxes in order attach the necessary documents to them. These include LORs, Photo, and your USMLE transcripts. NOTE! Your USMLE transcripts can only be checked when the application season opens on September 1st, 2016. There is a one time fee of 65$ I believe that will be included in your final invoice.
  7. On September 15th, 2016, go to your programs list and check the box next to each program. Scroll down and complete the steps to make the payment. Once you have paid, wait to receive your confirmation.
  8. To kill 2 birds with one stone: After you have completed the payment, go to NRMP website and register for the match. It is a one time 65$ fee. This will come in handy in February, when you will do your ranking.
  9. You can check the status of your ERAS application for each program in ADTS, which is located on the top right bar next to “Messages.”
  10. Now the wait begins. You will get notifications to your e-mail and ERAS “Messages” section for interviews and rejections!

Stepwise guide for ECMFG certification

Very silly question, but how exactly do we use the google doc link? Every member has to edit it and fill down their details?

Cool. Also you might want to include a column for research experience on the spreadsheet

the google spreadsheet quickly failed last year.

the tried and true method is just to copy paste and add changes in different colors

I have not taken my CK yet, planning to have my CK in mid of august. Can I open token and upload all my info. with my MSPE. But for some reason I could not do my CK in august... would that will affect my application for the 2018 match, or not?

I don't think it will but not 100% sure. Some say it would not look nice but there are others who say it does not mean anything. ECFMG/ERAS would definitely show you as a repeat applicant and your documents will be forwarded for next season.

Default LOR?

Hey,
Question concerning LOR:
Do we have to wait to get the PDF version from ERAS, late June, to request letters or can we get them already now? If we get them (waived), how do they submit them? Im an IMG and will be graduating in 2017 and plane to do the 2017 match.

Read the above post which explains the process. Cannot send them now. You can only upload LoR once you buy the token and have access to MyERAS or ERAS support services at ECFMG. If its waived LoRs, you will be using LoR portal via MyERAS to send a request to the letter writers to upload the letter.

Is there any advantage in taking step 3 prior to residency for a USIMG?

Could be useful if your have average to low scores. But with your scores don't think people would be too concerned about step 3

Just to be safe, you better call ECFMG and confirm what your YOG is.

During my ECFMG certification, I had the same doubt as to what I should put down as my graduation date. ECFMG told me that the last day on which I would fulfill the requirements to receive my final diploma (ie my last day of internship) would be my graduation date. (I received my degree 2 months later).

But with regards to our ERAS application, i am not entirely sure.

It would be really helpful if someone has any additional insight regarding this topic.

Default Hi everyone!

Thank you guys for the links- very helpful.
First (and hopefully last) match.

247/225/PASS/NO STEP 3/2011 with continues clinical experience /Need J1 or H1/1m USCE 2016/ 3PUB

I am worried about "YOG-Application year" gap but in my case it was mandatory to practice 5 years as a GP after an internship year and before residency so had no choice.

I have gained great clinical experience and have an awesome recent 2016 USCE with LOR from an attending physician at a very well known university-based program.
Any tips on how to convey programs not to automatically discard my application just based on my YOG but actually take a look into it??

Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor

Unless you have contacts, I am afraid that you will be automatically screened by the YOG filters placed by programs that need YOG <5 years.

However, you could apply to programs that accept YOG >5 years, especially community programs. I have heard that some program directors appreciate home country experience.

Is the 5 year practice as a GP following medical education a compulsory requirement in order to receive your degree?

Yes, the 5y practice is compulsory after graduation in my country.
I will definitely apply to programs with no YOG filter but will consider sending an explanatory email (with attached CV+personal statement) requesting to make an exception and consider my candidacy.
Maybe you guys can think of other ways/ideas - thanks.

Your idea is good. I don't really think it will make a difference, but it can't hurt. Who knows? You might impress a few PDs with your CV....

Wow.... A 5 year practice requirement? That's tough. If you don't mind me asking you, may I know which country you're from?

Hopefully my cv/p.s/recent usce/LOR will get their attention somehow...
By the way, do you have an idea when can I assume that I have been filtered out by a certain program? I don’t want to contact them to early (have not been filtered out yet) or to late (program almost finished interviewing).

If you don’t mind, I prefer to keep the answer “idiopathic” or “NOS” to your question…

Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor

You could spend a couple thousand dollars extra on applying to programs that would screen you out immediately due to your YOG. Or you could apply to only those programs for which you are eligible for and save that money.

Practically speaking, if a program states that it doesn't consider anyone with a YOG > 5 years, they usually mean it.

Your explanatory email would most likely get ignored by the program coordinator, as they are very busy during the match season. And there is a slim chance that the program coordinator would forward this email to the PD.

As I have said before, the only way for you to stand a chance to be invited for an interview at a program for which you don't qualify, is if you have contacts at that program.

If money is not a problem, you can proceed with your plan. Good luck.

Hi, thank for the response also wanted to ask
1) because I graduated in 2012, so when selecting the year of graduation should it based on the year of applying to eras(sept 2016) or should it be based on the year of applying to match(march 2017).---this is confusing as if I use 2016 then its 4 yrs since graduation, but if I do it based on the march 2017 then it becomes 5 yrs since graduation.

please advise thank you.

I have been told by a PD that they mean the year that you will start the program, meaning 2017... I know, bad news

are you first author in your publications? do you have US co-authors or otherwise well renowned internationally? One way we have seen the YOG hurdle being overcome is via solid research and excellent LORs. As has been pointed out in Sept you will likely be filtered out if they have 5 year YOG requirement BUT depending on your research/pubs, you could reach out the PDs now- showcasing your research. Many of them will be interested and may get back to you to discuss-depending on how compelling your email is and how you position your research

Thank you guys for the links- very helpful.

Sadly, programs can auto filter out applicants based on criteria, such as YOG and step score. I think your best bet is to apply very broadly to places that have a track record of taking IMGs. look at FRIEDA to see the percentage of IMGs that a program has; that's how I made my application list.

Good luck! I matched this year, and start next month. Hope to see you match

Hey congrats on matching again. Which do you think is better? Applying on 15th without being ECFMG certified or applying a week later after certification?

Hi, if the YOG cut off of a program is within 5 years, where would I fit in if my YOG is 2012?

There's some divided opinion on this one. Some say, it's calculated from your graduation till application date, others say till match date and still others say till admission date. Only a few programs have specified in their websites about what they want for their program (eg. graduated within 5 years of application OR graduated within 5 years of start of academic year, etc.).
Either way, with your graduation date being 2012, you should be able to beat the cut-off (if you're applying for Match 2017).

Default Tutoring: The Residency PS for the IMG 25 USD

About to start training in Internal Medicine on July 1st.

I did have a good time advising and correcting other applicants' PS last MATCH season. Several of them are now on about to start their training this year.

I would like to offer my services of reading, correcting, and advising 2017 MATCH applicants on their personal statements.

to use my services, contact me to my email at imgpersonalstatement@gmail.com or to https://www.facebook.com/PSfortheIMG

I charge a fee of 25 USD for each time I read, correct and advise on a PS.

FYI.
1) I do not write PS for other applicants. I do believe that if you are not able to write your own PS, you should not be allow to practice medicine. Therefore, I won't write your PS.
2) I have a strong work's ethic; therefore, I won't share any emailed PS to a third party.

Default Tips for a Strong ERAS and Personal Statement

The 2016-2017 season is about to kick off. The process of writing a personal statement can be challenging. What is the story that you want to tell? What are the key highlights of your application that you need to identify? Should you bring up 'red flags' such as failed Step scores or a long time from medical graduation?

How important is the personal statement?

Personal statement - how to write the perfect eras personal statement

9/12/2015
The personal statement is always a challenge for candidates, particularly IMGs. We have a strong opinion on personal statements. We’ve written dozens of them. We’ve edited many more. We’ve asked Program Directors about personal statements. Our advice here in is the same thing other consultants would charge you hundreds or thousands of dollars for. Most importantly, we’re going to use our ACTUAL essays to give you an EXACT example of what we are talking about.

American medical school graduates have the luxury of writing personal statements for college AND medical school. They instinctively know how to write personal statements that are able to sell their interests and skills. This Chapter will help level the playing field using OUR OWN personal statements as outlines.

1) A good personal statement will open the doors for a great interview. A good personal statement gives the interviewer something to break the ice for.
2) A good personal statement will probably not get you an interview if your grades or USMLE scores are too low. This is the true hard facts.
3) A bad personal statement may actually prevent you from getting an interview EVEN if your grades or USMLE scores are good enough
Keep it under 1 page. If it's longer than that, you run the risk that an interviewer will not even read it.

The most important sentence of the entire personal statement is the FIRST one. Remember, faculty members and interviewers are SKIMMERS. If you do not catch their attention with your first line, then you will lose the interviewer.

After this, the overall structure after this is going to incorporate a discussion of your clinical interest in the specialty you are applying to and then a research interest in the specialty you are applying to. Be specific about situations and contributions. Do not simply state you are interested in internal medicine. Discuss a patient case that convinced you this was the field for you.

When should you include a statement about a red flag?
1) If you failed any of the steps

If you scored low or didn't match before, we often times do not recommend you write about it.

There are a lot of services offering to edit/improve your personal statement. We have a blog post that uses our actual personal statements as examples. Check it out here along with many more tips.

Ask your school administrative section or dean to issue one for you. Bare minimum, it should have your marks from first to final year.

you can request the usmle transcript to be released around the time you apply for the programs around September via MyERAS. People usually do that around September 1st or last week of August once you have the results of step 1 and 2 out.

Default advice

I am a IMG from Pakistan and I am looking for some answers.
I applied last year in few programs in IM based on 6 week observership in IM last year and I didnt match. Since November I have been involved in Research in surgery at state university and I have done poster presentation, gonna submit a study and continue to collect data in OR. I didnt get any good opportunity in IM. Now I am in a big confusion. My cv is going towards surgery and it is very tough to get a interview in surgery. If i apply in IM based on cv i have I am not sure i will get any interviews in IM either. I dont know what to do. I still continue to get opportunities in different departments of surgery for research and probably will get LORs from chiefs. Also If some one can tell me about IMG friendly programs in surgery I will appreciate.
BTW my scores are 233 in step1, 239 ck, step3 221

Hi everyone. A quick question. I saw in one of the signatures that some people have 7 LORs. I think the LORs that can be sent to one program is max 4. Why did you get 7 LORS? Thanks.

If you need a visa then its safe to yes for j1. Because even if you have given step 3 and are eligible for H1b, 80-90% of the programs will only sponsor J1 visa.

Guess they are trying to be safe. Also you can attach different letters for different programs.

Default USCE mentioning in the application

Hi everyone!
Considering the fact that USCE is of great importance to PD’s considering IMGs, do you mention USCE months in the ERAS online application? If so, where exactly in the application do u mention it (my best guess is in “Experience” section under “Work Experience”).
Thank and good luck

Try to get done with step 3 and apply this year. Delaying it won't help your application. Key for us IMGs who have had scores on average to lower side is applying smartly to a good mix of programs. Research FREIDA well and make your list. Also look for more usce to improve your chances. Couple of guys from my college had scores in high 220s and matched into low to mid tier community programs, so you have a shot if you apply smartly and broadly! Good luck

From what I have heard, timing is not that important (though if you want a H1b, you need to have step 3 results by Feb before the ROL). Places tend to favour IMGs who are done with step 3 (or who are about to be done with step 3 soon) especially when candidates have a roughly similar scores and profile as they don't have to worry about costs on board review courses and stuff for step 3.

Hi guys, is getting the img friendly INt Med programs list solely from match a resident absolutely reliable ? Or should I do my own research about programs ?

Lot of posts about chances of getting into residency here. Guys, there is no point asking these questions. I realize that you want to get a fair idea about your chances but the fact of the matter is nobody can really answer that question. Spend time building on your application. I guess you would know which part/parts of the application would need more work. Apply and leave the rest to God/fate. Good luck

Definitely, say no AOA at your school or GHHS. This is important because you do not want residency program directors to think you didn't get AOA/GHHS.

Hi, Can someone pls help me with certain things-when should one certify the eras application ideally? I have an upcoming experience in the fall should i mention it in my application this time, I dont want to miss on that but not sure if one can list a future exp and last thing- does one need to fulfill the requirements of the programs strictly for applying- learnt from few that they actually matched where they hadnt specifically fulfilled the requirements listed. I know thats a lot to ask in one post, thanks.
