Probability IMG Matching Success Ratio; What are the odds!

I am an IMG, completed MBBS in India by April 2012. I am looking to take step 1 & 2 before April 2013 so that I can target for residency in 2014. But I am worried to see double 99ers not getting matched. I will give my best, but I want to know the odds.
  1. How many IMGs apply for match and how many of them go unmatched?
  2. What are the odds in scramble?
  3. What do ppl usually do if they dont get residency despite good scores?

Thanks,
Subu

1. 60% Unmatched Rate (should increase this year)
2. Odds in scramble are worse than odds in the regular match
3. No idea.

Default IMG Stats

1) In 2012, according to the ECFMG, 49% of US citizen IMG's matched and 41% of non-US citizen IMG's matched. The figures are 2,102 and 2,775 respectively. However, a significant number of IMG's (possibly over 2,000) may have gained residency places OUTSIDE of the match.
2) Uncertain/poor
3) One answer is: Try again next year (Apply to more programs. Target those programs that are more likely to accept you, if you have not already done so.)

Thumbs Up

I can answer question # 3 for you...

Basically there are really only two options:
(1) scramble or
(2) take a year off and reapply next year.

You can also apply to further study or research programs if you're in the states.

Here are the references for further detail:

Good luck.

Pre-match was open to IMG's. I am informed that a pre-match offer usually came after the interview. However, it seems that the NRMP policy is set to outlaw this practice, beginning in 2013. Here is a link to their statement:
http://www.nrmp.org/all-in.pdf

Note that there is a suggestion that Family Practice and some other Residencies may be exempt from this rule. I haven't seen the new codified policy, yet, so the future is still somewhat uncertain.

I do believe, though, that IMG's can be a bit more tactical with their Residency applications (researching programs, applying early, widely applying) and that this could improve their chances of matching.
