I have an attempt in Step 1 and 205 on retake. CS result pending (I took on July 15th so I'll get it during the Aug 14 to Sep 14 score reporting period) and currently studying for CK. Can my CV and a good CK score make up for the step 1 attempt? I'm all into pediatrics only.

Thanks in advance and glad a 2017 thread was initiated!

Hi dlphn055,

To my understanding you wont be ecfmg certified on time for the upcoming match(by sept 15). Having an attempt will decrease your chances of having interviews but u could compensate by passing step 2 ck on first attempt >220 (ideally >240). Also, being a recent grad, having USCE and research experience will be really helpful. In any case nothing is impossible :-)

Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your response. I'm planning on taking CK at the end of August or first week of September so that my score comes by 2nd or 3rd week of September and latest by 4th week of September. Once the score is available I'll certify. So hopefully I'll be certifying my application before Sept 30th and it wont be too late like October.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try to get 240 plus and dreaming of a 260 plus on CK. Had high 250s and one 262 in step 1 nbmes when I studied the second time and I think test day anxiety and pre-exam insomnia sort of screwed me over. My worry is that I'll be filtered out from most program systems and wont get the chance to demonstrate my communication skills and experiences.

Thanks again and hoping we all match!!

Man!, You're super qualified! I think 9 pubs is AMAZING! Don't worry, you'll be fine . Step 1 Score is an important filter, I will not lie to you. But you have lots of things to make up for it, so don't lose hope!

I think the fact that you're a citizen helps a LOT. A Step 1 attempt does hurt your application, but I believe you got a great shot. Apply widely and do not feel embarrassed to write to PDs and PCs asking for interviews!

Where was the rejection from? I got one as well, but it was because I didn't read their visa policy properly. I know last year the students made a thread of the places where they heard back from for interviews or rejections. Should we make one this year too? Or if anyone knows how to set up a public excel sheet?

I apparently don't have enough posts to paste the link here from last years, but if someone who is able to messages me I'll send it to you and we can get something started! Good luck this season everyone!!

Would you guys mind specifying where those rejections were from? I have a friend thst got one from Nationwide Children's due to not having the 1 year of USCE they require

Got a rejection from The University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, because I didn't meet the interview criteria. I guess it was NOT being a fresh graduate.

Don't take it personally. They always reject IMGs within the first week. It's a s!all IMG unfriendly program.

YES! That is the one I was talking about. Are you able to message MedAcolyte above and grab the link from them to post here? It seems most of us are new on this forum and don't have enough posts to post links yet :/ Plus, don't want to fill the entire thread with random messages just to get post count up =P

So now we have a spreadsheet too!
Lets comment here ppl.. I guess it is going to be very useful for everybody applying for peds this year! If you dont want to identify yourself, just write anonymous as your name.. you dont even have to be part of this forum to edit this spreadsheet

It will be good for us to keep in touch during this stressful period!

I haven't gotten any either yet. It is way too early to get nervous. Keep your cool. Most interview invites come early.to.mid October. We panic then haha

I totally agree wih lalamoosa! Don't panic yet. My resident friends tell me that offers from big/middle size programs come in early October. So let's just keep our cool.

Thanks for the reassurance guys! Only reason was that it seemed I got stuff the very first day and then absolutely nothing. Like our steps, I guess we just wait and watch (albeit more anxiously though haha).

Firstly, sorry Pedshopeful17.....I didn't realize I was creating such a similar name.I just applied today (a little late as I was getting some things situated), so I hope that doesn't set me back any. Anyway, I'm slated to graduate in the spring with a 219 step 1 score, 231 CK and a PASS on CS (all on 1st attempt). I applied broadly across the east coast. Would anyone like to chime in and shed some light on my chances? I could definitely use some words of encouragement. Additionally, GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!

Default Another 2017 Peds Hopeful

Hi all,

I'm expecting to graduate in spring 2017 with a 227/228/Pass/J1-eligible/1month USCE @ Hopkins Childrens (total peds electives - 4 months)/ 1 abstract submitted.

Like above, I've applied along the East coast with a New England focus. Haven't heard a thing so far - no IV but no rejections either. My step scores and lack of publications (despite +++ research experience) have me a bit uneasy.

Best of luck!

lalakala...I think you have a great stats (for all that's worth). The ECFMG charting the outcomes for 2016 just came out and you look like you're right around the average for matched applicants that are US IMGs. For non-US IMGs it's a little lower but still, you're stats look good.

Updated with CS result. Just took CK recently, will get results Oct 12th and aiming to get my application ready before then. How much will it hurt if I apply mid October?

I would say that applying mid October definetely hurts, but it is hard to say how much. You will lose the chance of getting IVs at places that already filled their interview spots, for example. But there are programs that will start sending IVs as late as November (others keep sending even after that), so don't lose hope. A great CK score will definetely help.. And, of course, if you have any contact in the US (mainly at programs that you are applying), as soon as you receive your CK, you should let them know. Never underestimate the power of contacts for this Match proccess.. I've heard so many cases people with bad scores and good contacts that matched and, in the other hand, there are lots of people with average score that don't.

Anyway, good luck!

(by the way, here is the link again for the spreadsheet! Keep updating guys! Just got a rejection from U. Kentucky, but then they "corrected" it and send me an aknowledgment... Oh well, things are going slow for me

And please, DONT get worried.. IVs will come for you too! I know people who got his first IV mid october, and ended up with 10+ IVs. Getting IVs early doesnt mean you are more "desirable" or that you are going to get more IVs in the end. So no worries

I am still waiting. Its really hard since people are getting invites from programs where I have applied.

Are you sure early invite does not mean one is more desirable? Don't programs have preferences who they send invites to?

Sure, you are absolutely right. There are many things to follow:

1. First of all, there are no guidelines for residency programs. Each and every program has their own filter criteria. So you never know with certainty that if one person gets an IV at one place, then why he/she's not getting IV at other?

2. Second thing is Score. Definitely score matters, but only for filter. But there is one dramatic twist in this too. Usually in Sept, first of all programs don't consider FMG's applications because they have obligations for their own grad students. But programs only consider FMG applications with score of 230/240 above and out of that too, they only call the applicants after going through their whole profile. So, my point is nothing is absolute while we are applying for residency.

All the above statements are in effect to 2-3 years of experience in US university health system. And moreover, this is just from personal experience and feedback from PD, and Peds chair. Nothing personal.

Thanks and have a great IV season to all!

What is a pre-interview? Some have mentioned it for UIC!

It's a skype meeting, 10 mins, to screen applicants before offering real IVs

I like the idea of having a pre-interview before being called for an onsite interview.

Atleast, it would avoid you racking up costly bills on flights, hotels, etc.

Hey guys, I know this may sound like a really silly question, but regarding the MSPE, how important is it for it to be up by this Saturday? I just spoke with my school, and apparently they are so backlogged they haven't started mine yet. Needless to say, I'm livid, especially because they were supposed to start the process over the summer. Any idea if programs re-download applications at a later date after this?

Very nervous re: my step 1 score. Someone please make me feel better.
Man!, You're super qualified! I think 9 pubs is AMAZING! Don't worry, you'll be fine . Step 1 Score is an important filter, I will not lie to you. But you have lots of things to make up for it, so don't lose hope!
Sorry I should have responded earlier thanks so much for your encouragement! Got my first interview so hopefully there will be more to come! Do the majority of invites get sent out after the mspe is released?

Programs usually wait for mspe. Plus amgs come before imgs. Things should get better next week!

IVs from SUNY Downstate started pouring this morning. Got one! So excited!
Be careful with scheduling because it filled up FAST!

Hey guys,
Why would programs send out more IVs than they have slots for? The whole thing is stressful enough. It doesn't seem fair that we have to 'scramble' for slots.
Also I can't really open eras messages on the browser on my phone, so I worry that when I get an invite I might not be close enough to a pc to book a date. Or is there another way around it? Thanks

It's not just you guys, that is a problem that's been going on for years. I don't think there's a way around it and we just need to be very alert.

I didn't apply there because of their 1 yeas USCE requirement. I received an offer for IV from University of Illinois at Chicago
