Help Advice for Match 2013

Hi,
I am an IMG, graduating in 2012 . I have completed step1 with a score of 235/84, going to give step 2 CK on 20th june 2012 and Step 2 CS on 31st August 2012 . I have some queries.

1. can I make it for 2013 Match ? I am looking for pediatrics
2. Do we require score from Step 2 cs for applying for ECFMG certification ?
3. Should I apply with Incomplete scores on 15th Sept or wait for my CS scores?
4. is there any way that I can start the ECFMG certification process and add to it the CS scores when I get them ?
5. I wish to leave to the US and complete the process of applying there, what documents do i need to take with me before leaving for the us ? I have got the LOR i need and I will get my credentials verified in a month

thanks

1. You can make it, if you dont submit your CS results on Sept 15th (which you wont have anyways), most places wont even look at your app if you dont have a CS result because that's an area where IMG's tend to fail. In short, you can apply without it, but it wouldn't be wise.

2. There isn't a score on CS, its pass or fail. Certification requires scores of Step 1 + CK, and CS Results + Med school graduation. So no, you wouldn't be ECFMG certified.

3. Certification process can only be done with all the scores are present, as well as the document verification. So no, you have to get all the scores & the med school documents, then only will the certification process begins.

4. All your medical school transcripts etc.

I recommend not applying for this years match because I expect your CS results to come at the earliest middle of December, which will hurt your application ALOT because that's 1/2 the interview season gone!

Also, do you have any USCE? If not, then that's more of a reason to not go for the match as more and more programs require it. (Unless you're rich of course, then you can try going for the match )

Thank you for your reply , I still have some questions
1. in regard to your affirmative answer to 1st question; Is ECFMG certification required to apply for match ? Can I participate in Match without getting ECFMG certified ?
2. The reason I am applying this year is because I have heard from my uncle That with the increase in the no of AMG's, the chances of IMG's getting a seat are almost none. Is this true ?
3. My Uncle is a pediatrician in US. Can he help in any way ?
4. I have got no USCE but i plan to do observer ship / Paid externship during July-August. I am not exactly rich but I can spend money if it has good returns.
5. If I fail / do not apply this year , what will be your advice to do for the match next year ?

Thanking you
Lakshit jain

Answers to your questions:
  • ECFMG certificate is not needed to participate in ERAS but your chances will be higher if you have it.
  • Paid externship worth paying for it as it increases your chances.
  • Yes. your pediatrician uncle can help you (connections with residency programs)
  • In 2011 and 2012, there was no decreasing trend of IMG matching, if ever there will be decreasing trend in 2013, it will never be "none" that is not possible in the foreseeable future

Most of the paid externships are in private clinics, though many of the doctors providing the opportunity are from hospitals.Do these externships from private clinics hold value .

I suppose it's better than not having anything at all but some programs actually specify that you need USCE in accred. hospitals. Contact the programs you're going to apply to and double check before spending the money.

Hi,
I changed my step 2 CS date to 20th august. According to 2012 step 2 CS reporting schedule this will lead to my result arriving within Oct 1st to Oct 31st. I am currently looking for an earlier date, In 1st week of august; If possible.
I have also looked for paid externship with FMGportal , and they are allowing me to do observership at Queen's New York and St George's @ Chicago .
I further have some questions.
1. would a 2 month extern ship be OK ? they are only going to provide Outpatient experience in pediatrics. I can pay extra for another month if there is any significant advantage.
2. how much time does it take to get ECFMG certified once you have all the documents ? I have heard from my seniors that it takes around 14d after they recieve the credentials from your university.

thanks
Lakshit

I am not the best person to comment but wanted to share some thoughts.
Externships yes it would be good but would be better if these people put you to any ACGME approved hospitals as they PDs are now well versed with the fact these companies get you a standardized LORs.
And if you contact the programs they would say you to have recognised USCE.I emailed several programs and got the same email.

Results wont matter if you are giving the exam late or early in the particular time slot for cs.Its a luck affair some people get it early and some late.

Yes your seniors are right it takes around 2 weeks.
