Default Exam result and ecfmg certified

Hello. The score is delayed this year like the previous times. It will be released on 14th September if ck is taken on July 10th or later.

Can anyone tell me how long did it take to get the certificate after the result is out (i.e.September 14th)?

And if the score is out on September 14th, around what time would ECFMG and ERAS website should show me as being ecfmg certified?

Would it be okay to apply a little (say a week) late rather on 15th sept after I get the physical ecfmg certificate?

ECFMG told me that I would receive it within 10 days from the day I became eligible for ECFMG certification ( med educ verified and passed all exams).

I got it in exactly 7 days via FedEx.

Is your address on ECFMG record a US address? If it is not, it may take more time.

That's a really tough call.

Some say that a lot of programs download applications in the first week following Sept 15th.

Some say that if you apply on Sept 15th without an ECFMG certificate, you might get screened by filters placed by some programs.

I can put up a US address but if the ck result is out on September 14th, so I might be delayed applying by a week at least to be certified. Do you remember how long did it take for the Standard ECFMG certificate section in OASIS to be updated after the result of the last exam?

I think a few days, I don't exactly remember. There is usually a lag in your OASIS. ECFMG told me I was eligible for ECFMG certification, even though my OASIS hadn't been updated. I guess it takes time for it to appear in your OASIS.

If you have all your medical school credentials verified and get your CK on September 14, with all your exams completed, aren't you already certified? Can't you put a month and year when asked about this info on your profile. I suppose when you called them, they couldn't give you an exact date.

No, we are not certified. We are ELIGIBLE for certification. We are only certified when ECFMG ISSUES our physical paper certificate.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Oh man, I really don't know what to do. I don't think I will be ready for my CK before, July 8.

I think this might be true. I have read in older posts on this forum that you are certified the moment you get the result of the last step (if your credentials are already verified) and in the ERAS section on ecfmg certification you can just put the month and year the certificate was issued (which would be Sep 2016). I was hoping someone who as already been through the process would clarify this. The only this is if we presumptively put in September 2016 (before the certificate is recieved or OASIS is updated) will we get into trouble if we apply on september 15th? We technically would be certified(?) but would not get the physical certificate yet

Hmm. I guess we need to ask ECFMG tomorrow if passing all the exams and having the medical credentials verified = ecfmg certified(even if we don't get the certificate by post). The only place I can see which has information about the date ECFMG certificate was issued is ECFMG status report so the main questions is when would ECFMG status report show us as being certified? Is it after fulfilling the requirements for certification or after getting the physical certificate?
As the above post says that ERAS no longer asks for information about ECFMG certificate (can anyone please confirm this?), the only way programs would know whether or not we are certified is by looking at the ECFMG status report.

Yeah. I suppose you could put in the month and year on ERAS. If you complete all requirements for certification on Sept 14th, I guess your certificate would be issued within the month.

But, if for some reason ECFMG delays issuing of the certificate by more than 2 weeks (issued in Oct), then what would be the consequences? I know this is very rare, but it is a possibility.

I just looked at the 2016 ERAS worksheet, there is no section for ECFMG certification. So the only way programs would know is about it is by the ECFMG status report.

That's good news. Never knew that they removed that section.

So does that mean we should apply to programs that require the ECFMG certificate for application. Sorry if I sound silly and ignorant, but I am a little confused by this.

Don't worry about it.
Basically the only thing we have to find out from ECFMG is if we get our result on September 14th, approximately when would the ECFMG status report would show that we are certified (ECFMG status report gets automatically sent to ERAS application the moment we get the ERAS token and updated automatically with any new information, in our cases info about ECFMG certification).
If it takes time for the ECFMG status report to update the information about the ck result and ECFMG certification, I think its better to apply a little late (1week to 10 days max) rather than applying on 15th (if the programs download our application early they mah filter us out if we are not ecfmg certified).
Any input from recent applicants will be appreciated.

You mean to those programs that actually require a certificate. But the other programs that don't require it, apply on Sept 15?

Yes. But I have only seen a very few community programs that specifically state being ECFMG certified is not a requirement to be called for interviews. So a good majority of programs will want us to be certified by 15th. The more serious issue is the information about our ck result. When will the information about ck be updated in the ECFMG status report? also another thing that needs clarification is usmle transcript. If we get the transcript after obtaining the ck result on 14th, ECFMG website says it takes 1-2 days to send it to the programs via eras (so that should be okay but will the usmle transcript be updated the very day ck result is out?)

Spoke with them.
So you are NOT ECFMG certified when you get the ck result. After the ck result is out, it would take at least 10 business days to process and issue the ECFMG certificate. And its around that time that OASIS and ECFMG status report would be updated to show that we are certified. The processing and issue of the certificate is within 10 days.
Let me know if you find out anything different.

Ugh, I don't know if I want to apply late in those programs and wait the week or 2. Majority of my classmates got interview invites in October, so who knows, will be certified them.

Thanks ewu88. I know that we can apply without the ECFMG certificate. We have to be ECFMG certified by ROL in February 2017 to be eligible to the 2017 match. It's just that if you have average scores (like I do in step 1), programs prefer applicants who are already certified prior to being called for interviews.
Anyways lets see how it goes. Good luck to you as well!

Yeah I do as well, but it would stink if I got a lower step 2 ck score as a result of trying to get the ECFMG certificate on time. I cannot promise myself that I can ace it by July 8. I don't know how critical each medical program about their guidelines. I know some of my classmates who applied this year and got interviews despite not doing US clinical electives, or meeting the requirements of 6-12 months of US clinical experience. Who really knows how this process works.

Yeah. It would definitely be foolish to compromise on a poor ck score just for the sake of getting the result early. And its true, no one really knows how applicants are called for interviews but scores and LoRs followed by YOG play a good role. In the end, I guess it would come down to whether or not we are able to reach the score we are comfortable with trying out prior to July 8th. For me, if I get above 235-240s in nbme, I would be okay with giving it before the date or I would have to postpone it. Lets hope for the best.

this whole ECFMG certification thing is so nerve wrecking!! why did they have to do it now...urghh! I think I'd rather not compromise on the score if it comes down to choosing between the two.

Agreed!
Btw has anyone seen the announcement about 2017 ERAS info for IMGs. It says that you can start applying to programs from September 6th (though the programs can only download your applications from 15th). Don't think it was like this last year.
