Just wondering if you passed all of your steps in one go. Also, how much observership total will you have?

The average Step 1 score for non US Senior applicants who matched in 2011 was 225, but you are well within the range. I can make some suggestions about where you can apply, but I would like to know if you had any failures on the steps.

Ed

We were talking about IM, so the 225 referred to Internal Medicine and Step 1 only. Also, the average 2011 score in FM for non-US seniors who matched was 204 for Step 1. This data comes from the free NRMP publication 'Charting outcomes in the Match' (4th. edition).

To see what program directors consider important take a look at this:

http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty.pdf

It's from 2008, but all of that information should still be relevant.

you did not throw light on the importance and impact of CONTACTS especially if someone has spouse or very close relative like uncle etc are in faculty..plus i am curious that why matching scores of imgs are usually lower than that american graduates??logic says it should be vice versa.

I haven't seen any data or even heard any anecdotal evidence on how important having a close relative in a the selection committee of a residency program is. So your guess is as good as mine. But if you are saying that having a personal contact in an influential position in a residency program is an asset, I would have to agree with you.

I think that AMG scores are on average higher than IMG scores. So, IMG's that match will do so, on average, with lower scores. Remember than IMG's are usually competing for residencies that are less popular among AMG's.

i got 215/80 in step 1 .i read and hear so varied opinions regarding getting an IM match that i have left it to god.I am now sure that only way i will know for sure is when i will apply .therefore there is nobody in the world who can tell chances for sure about chances of getting residency ,even if somebody gets 230+
best is keep moving forward and pray

Your score is a bit low, but the task is not impossible. A few things you can do.
1. Get a fabulous score on Step 2 CK.
2. Get great LOR's.
3. Apply to a large number of programs.
4. Look for a personal contact who can put in a good word for you.

It is still not going to be easy, but if you really want to be a US Resident, have a backup plan (applying to FM, for instance).

Just my 2 cents worth.
Ed.

I read this advice somewhere, that may help:
"After board scores, clinical experience is very important. The best type of clinical experience are electives at US medical schools taken as a student. You will significantly limit the number of interviews you get without this. It is important to get strong letters of recommendation from attendings on these elective rotations. Appear keen and diligent, do extra reading, look for opportunities to publish case reports, enquire about possibilities of co-authoring review articles or getting involved with research. Keep in touch with the attendings as they will be able to help you get interviews later on.
