Default Can I apply for Match 2017 with my current stats?

I took Step 1 at the end of May, results come out July 14th. I just took CS June 30th and the results come out anywhere from August 17th to September 14th latest. Now all I have left is to take CK.

There's a few problems I'm facing regarding what I have to do and what I need done, so I'll place it in bullet format to make it easy.

-I need to take my CK sometime in the first or second week of August to ensure I get the results by Sept 15th, but I may be competing w/ some others who took it after July 9th as their scores will also come out Sept 15th due to the change in exam format.

-Depending on my Step 1 score result, I may or may not need to focus extra hard on scoring well on the CK to compensate if necessary, 1 month may not be enough time.

-I heard I need my CK, CS, and Step 1 scores all completed and sent in NO LATER than Sept 15th, is that true?

-I've been working at a clinic since I graduated, from Sept 2014 to Aug 2015, then took a break for Step 1 and CS. I was thinking of starting to work again 1 day a week so I can write on my LOR "Working from Sept 2014 to Sept 2016" and convince my boss to ignore that time period I wasn't working. But if I want to take CK in 1 month, I need full on 7 days/week 14 hrs/day prep and won't even be able to manage that 1 day/week it seems. Or should I do it anyway, as having 1 full year off in the middle will look bad during my residency matching process?

-My last and final option is what some others have told me, is to simply give up on Match 2017 and go for 2018, and by then have Step 3 completed as well, and also get a few externships and hospital work or maybe research in before applying in Sept 2017 for the 2018 match. I'd rather not do this as that'd be 4 years after grad instead of 3 (Grad: July 2014)

Sorry if it's long, but it's been bothering me for a while now! Thanks!

It all depends on how quick of a reader you are. But preparing for CK in just a month is not easy; you might have to skip a few things if you are considering this. Reviewing UW alone may take a month but if you have prepared well for step 1, the fundamentals are there and you might be able to rush through.

It would be best if you could be get through the two steps by September 15th. Not being ECFMG certified when you apply might be okay (though not ideal) but applying with a step left or pending result is not a very good idea as that could affect your interview chances.

I know a guy of who missed a couple of weeks of a 3 month observership but asked his attending to count the period as well. And the physician did not mind. If you attending is okay with it, you can certainly forget about the missed period.

Thanks for the reply.

I know it will be tough but I'll try anyway. If I'm unable to do well on an nbme in August I will delay my residency a year. On July 14th I'll have my Step 1 score so I'll be in a better position to determine how well I need to do on my CK for my chances at residency.

I missed several months so it's worse, but I believe I should start working at least once a week asap in order to make the gap less wide and make my attending more likely to ignore the months gap that I took in working. Especially if I need an LOR from her in Sept to apply, I should start working again now, right?

The only reason why I was even considering NOT working now is because it will hinder my CK prep as I need every minute possible dedicated to CK prep since I need to take it so damn soon. All this would be MUCH easier if I just gave up and apply next year, but I don't know if I should just give up like that without a fight.

Your plan looks good. Give an assessment next month (preferable nbme 4 or 6 or uwsa as they are said to be more predictable of step 2 ck score) and make your decision based on that. But just so you know, the self assessments for step 2 are no where as close to predicting the score accurately compared to step 1. So you might have to think of a safe score in your mind above which you would feel comfortable giving the exam. I think you will need every minute in ck preparation if you just have a month. I think if you know the attending well enough, she might not care about the few missing months a lot. More often than not, the attending's are willing to help us out in any way possible so it would be great if you could convince her.
