Question Years since graduation definition

Hi,
Since some programs only accept IMGs who graduated less than 5 years ago, I wanted to know how they calculate this 5 years? is this from the date that the medical degree was issued till the date you want to apply? or till the date you want to start the residency?
Thanks

Should it be less than five years before you submit your application or before the first day of your training?

Program directors are concerned about "the gap" that you have in your clinical training.

Ideally, they should be looking at the duration from your last day of clinical training until the day you start your residency. However, unfortunately, that's not always the case.

What happens is that Program Coordinators apply an ERAS filter. This filter will look at the date of your graduation and if it is more than (2 or 3 or 5 years , varies with different programs) they won't be looking at your application at all, even though you might still be working during that time and you don't actually have a gap.

Sometimes they post in their website the information like saying "we accept 2010 graduates and later" for example. So they set a graduation year for their filter, it's not like they calculate it until day one of residency.

I always encourage IMGs to try to bypass this issue by contacting the programs by phone or email, tell them that although you have 4 years since graduation but you have been working and doing observerships and so forth.
