Default Happy to help and give guidance for those interested in surgery

Hey,

I am happy to help anybody who has questions. I am a foreign IMG and matched into a categorical general surgery program.

It is hard work and I got extremely lucky. Maybe I can share some insights. Just ask and I am happy to answer.

This forum helped me a lot, so I want to give back.

Smile new aspirant needs our help

hello i am a final year student from india.i will be starting my internship in the coming january.i am really new to usmle.so i have many doubts.hope u bear with them.
i havent given step 1 yet. but planning to start preparing next year. what should be my timeline for all the steps?how much marks should i aim for in each step? {surgery being my interest}
what are the chances for being matched for surgery
i want to do my electives or rotations in the coming year.i am really keen to go for surgery.but i dont know if there is any scope for me to be finally matched for surgery being an img.so what is the safest and best option to go for electives if not surgery? what are the good and affordable hospitals to apply for?
looking forward to our reply..

First of all congratulations, you have done the job that seems impossible to most of the people, definitely it is a victory, lifetime victory!!! I'm dreaming about surgery since my childhood so I am 100% dedicated to this specialty, with no backup options. I have several questions.

1) From witch country you come from? Because it makes sense, not all IMG are "IMG" (carribs, canadians, graduates from well known European med schools) Or you come from country and medical school nobody knows even where is it situated?

2) what are your credentials? step 1,2,3

3) What about USCE and Research (publications)

4) How many applications you sent and how many IV's you got?

5) you got matched directly into CAT or you matched first into preliminary?

6) And the last question. The place where you matched, have you ever had previous experience with them? (rotation, or good contacts) ?

Thank you for sharing the information. I appreciate it very much!
