Default Step 1 Score of 247. What am I competitive for?

Hello all.

I am a Foreign IMG. I have only done Step 1 and scored 247.

Im wondering what specialities other than the primary care ones (FM, Psych, Peds) that I might be COMPETITIVE for with this score.

Am i competitive for Anesthesia, or Radiology or University Internal Medicine?
Thank you for your insight.

I have a step 1 score in 240s as well and will be applying for IM this year. Having spoken at great length with IM two University programs PDs, I have to say sadly no for university based IM. Both are mid tier university programs and the cut off for imgs is 260 (they also prefer candidates with strong research experience even if they score in high 250s). This is just my experience though. People with scores in 240s have certainly matched at university based prpgrams (read:contacts). Also, I think more important than university vs community based programs is how good a fit the program is for you. I know several community programs which are tons better than university programs. Radiology is hard for IMGs. Even US grads would be anxious to go for radiology with scores in 240s. Research plays a big role here. No idea regarding anesthesiology. This is a general idea. If you really want to apply to stuff like radiology or surgery, you have to build your application around it and 247 is not a bad start to do that.

Good luck with the match!! Sad to here that even a 247 isn't considered enough to get university IM Things are getting way too competitive.

Like I said those are just two programs(and I was talking about mid tier university programs which have had excellent fellowship matches). I think we will definitely make the filter for low tier university programs and might have a shot at few mid tier programs as well. Scores are just the begining, rest of the application like usce, research and lors matter as well. Good luck.

Honestly, I know people with LOWER scores who matched, and others with HIGHER scores who didn't match.

It depends on the WHOLE package. Your step 2, CS, personal statement, interviews, research, etc.

I say go for what YOU want. And it's just my opinion, I think your score is very competitive.

Default IMHO

IMHO,

universities program are of three types:
1. they don't want IMG, or only those IMG which are only one kind on earth (Harvard, Hopkins, Vanderbilt, duke): they definitely want 250/260s as filter for IMGs only, not AMGs(for AMGs they want 230s or 240s on average)

2. they want IMG with excellent profile (I would say like good AMGs): that mean 240s, research, letters, clinical experience

3. low tier program: they are dying, no AMG want to go there, they take mainly Caribbeans or IMGs, score more than average is required (>228 ish)+ good clinical experience and letters, research is appreciated by them but not necessary

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3046939/

so above is the link from may clinic proceeding, one of the prestigious journal in general medicine category.

go to the table 3 where they have mentioned the results (where they have mentioned the average step 1 score for interns of internal medicine in Mayo clinic) its 230.8 (its an average of about 40 people, so some might be below it too). Adding to it, the data is from 2005-2008 residents, if you look at the average step 1 score in 2008 it was 221, now its 229 so add about 10 for that and 5 for competition (which has increased in past few years) that comes around 245 ish.

I dont think mayo is a easy program even for an AMG, and published data doesn't look like they want only 260s.

Step scores are only for filters. I am a fellow now, scores matter to open the door, then if your application has good letters, USCE, and some research, that matters more. Stop thinking that scores are everything... that only shows that you are a good test taker and correlates with passing the specialty boards in the future.
