Default Last day to take Step 1 to meet Sept 15th deadline?

I have already cleared CK & CS.
Since the results are due on third Wednesday if I take the test on August 16th then my results should be out on August 31st ( being the third Wednesday).
According a post by Sabo, I should get ECFMG certificate within 1-2 weeks (usually 1 week) i.e. by September 14th.
But there are no dates available for first 2 weeks of August at any of the nearby Prometric center.
Only available dates are between 18 - 23 rd August.
I have provisionally booked a date during that week hoping that a date will become available during the second week o August.

My question: in the unlikely scenario if I have to take the test between 18 - 23 rd August will I get my results by September 7th and ECFMG certificate by September 14th or I am cutting it too close? or the third Wednesday means the 3rd Wednesday the week after your test day week?

Also, does it matter if I take it on 18th as compared to 23rd since both are after the previous Wednesday and before the next Wednesday?

Thanks for your help.

Will the online ECFMG certificate work or do I need a hard copy of ECFMG certificate to apply for match on Sept 15th?

Also, I think week for USMLE results runs from Thursday to Tuesday since the results come out on Wednesdays (3rd Wed) or the third Wednesday means the 3rd Wednesday the week after your test day week?

That means that I need to take the test by Tue, 23rd Aug to get my result on Wed, Sept 7th leaving the 2nd week of Sept to get the online ECFMG certificate.

I am trying to understand what does 3rd Wednesday means?

Does it work like this:

....................week 1 .......................week 2..........................week 3
August 17th ------------> August 24rd-------------> August 31th -------------> Sept 7th (Results due)?

So, if I take the test on Tuesday, Aug 16th I should get my results on August 31st or Is it Sept 7th ?

I am so confused

Default hey

if you are taking test on Wednesday, Thursday(i don't' think prometric is open on friday/saturday): it should come on third wednesday

if you are taking test on monday, tuesday: result will come on 4th wednesday.

in short the wednesday of test week is not counted in 3rd wednesday rule.

hope this clear your doubt!!

Thanks Gaurav for your help. Prometric centers near me are open on Fridays & Saturdays.

So IIUC if I want my result by August 31st, I have to take the test on or before Aug 13th

OR

if if I want my result by Sept 7th, I have to take the test between Aug 14th-Aug 20th?

I think you should (if you have a US address). ECFMG had said it takes 1-2 weeks to get the certificate after result but everyone I know got it in 5-10 days.

I practically live across the road from ECFMG Philadelphia office.
If I can get it in 5 days then it's fine but 10 days will not help unless programs still consider my application based on having passed all the steps.

Yeah but that depends entirely on luck though. One guy had the certificate on the 4th day after the result was out. But if you want to play it safe plan to get the result around or by Sept 1st.

Correct me if I am wrong but read on another forum that although some programs state "ECFMG Certified", they really mean "ECFMG Verified", in the sense you have all your scores in, minus the certificate.

They know the certificate is only issued when one has finished the requirements to graduate, which is usually Dec 31st but could be anytime before the start of residency.

I don't think that is correct. A good number of programs want IMGs to be certified when they apply. Some need ECFMG certification by ROL. But more competitive programs prefer applicants who are already certified by the time of application.

NRMP Main Residency Match

The NRMP matches applicants with available residency positions. You are required to register with NRMP by the NRMP Late Registration deadline in February in order to participate in this season’s Match.

Additionally, to participate in the Match, NRMP requires that the passing results of all exams required for ECFMG Certification (USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS) are available by the NRMP Rank Order List Certification deadline. You must also certify your NRMP Rank Order List by this deadline. If you have not yet taken and passed USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS), please see the Step 2 CS Schedule for Reporting Results. You do not need to be ECFMG certified in order to participate in the Match.

Yes, you can enter a rank order list. If the NRMP receives notification from ECFMG that you have passed the required examinations (USMLE® Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS), you will be included in the Main Residency Match. If the NRMP does not receive ECFMG confirmation of passed examinations, you will be withdrawn from the Main Residency Match shortly after the Rank Order List Deadline and your rank order list will NOT be used when the matching algorithm is processed.

Did not know that. Thanks. But if you look at the application requirements , most residency programs' websites would state that you need to certified by rank order list.

I also used to think that before I stumbled above info recently.

I don't want to misguide OP but do you think that he/she should be OK even if he/she did not receive ECFMG certificate by Sept 15 th?

This is my understanding so far:

You need to ECFMG verified (i.e. passed Step 1, CK and CS), not certified (i.e. passed Step 1, CK and CS & have your diploma) in order to apply for the Match on Sept 15th. So for interviews you will ideally want to be verified by the time ERAS opens to optimize your interview potential.

You won't be certified until you have passed Step 1, CK and CS & have your diploma. If you are already a graduate then obviously all you need is to pass Step 1, CK and CS.

But you need to be certified by the time of ROL submission date (which is late February) to participate in the match (you will be automatically withdrawn a week after the ROL is due if you are not certified.

Yeah this is what I know as well. You do not need to be certified when you apply in September (though this would be ideal as competitive programs prefer candidates to be certified and some programs ask for the certificate at interviews, people still match who weren't certified on applying) but you have to get the certificate by ROL.
