USMLE Scores LOw SCORE IN STEP 1

I am an IMG..a student in final year and internship remaining..got very low step 1 score..213/80(ashamed to tell iteven)..feel like a looser..is it the end of the road for me..well i know friends in this forum will say that u have chances, but realistically speaking do i really have a chance..spending parent's money and of course my time--is step 2 worth a try??or just leave my hopes of IM residency to winds and start preparing for PG of my country(i will just weep over this thought everytime)..really this forum and of course some of my seniors have been really helpful and so kind to me..so sincerely i have tremendous faith in the forum members and waiting eagerly for an honest reply..and of course i have no visa,no green card,no contacts too

Thumbs Up

Hey buddy sorry to hear this , I didnt know about your score !
I know it tough but all i feel is the reality is unknown to most of us .
Most of the people on this forum are IMG's and everything people say are what they have heard or read on another forums ... I would suggest you look at this link of IM residency on sdn where there mostly AMG's which know more than us about the system , they may be very blunt may also dislike your Qs , but many would help .....

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=41

dont get very discouraged as no one really knows the truth , but there are many with 210 to 220 range and even lower who are applying ....... you know for yourself if you move ahead you need to :
1) 250 + score on step2 . do it during internship or even later take another year after that but try to get it .

2) USCE : your at advantage that your in the final year , apply for electives now dont wait till final year , final year score of our med school does not count either for AIPG or USMLE even if you barely pass , many colleges like Mayo need you to attend electives during your final year not during internship so go there in feb 2013 before your internship starts , they need step 1 which you have .... dont complete your internship in one year extend it further , make sure you have 6 months of electives not observerships ....... step 1 score help alot more applications ..... electives are a tough process , alot of money , rejections will come but you will get into some and may have to do more later ....... but they will help with LORS ... by extending your internship you can do step2 too and will appear as a fresh grad if you complete it by 2015 and go for 2016 match ..... have a thought over this dont rush and try to go for 2015 match .....

3) then when you are done by 2015 feb with your graduation and electives and probably step2 . now apply for research email all attendings in big universities for research help ... a few contacts will develop and a few publications too .

4) this time from feb 2015 to sept 2015 you can give step 2 cs , make a good statement , get certified and have step 3 prep started which you should give by dec or jan 2016 ....

i know this looks like a long costly plan ..... thats what you need to do .. after this i feel pretty sure you will match but its upto you to decide as this is easy t write but difficult to make it true ...... but its doable ..
If you want to settle in USA go for it , if your plans are to come back see if you want to do Indian PG , but just dont do Indian PG thinking you cant make it to usmle becoz you can but its a tough road ahead .....

goodluck !!!!!
