Question Number of programs to apply for successful match?

Hi, I'm an IMG who graduated in 2011, needs visa, either J1 or H1b.
-Step 1 score 232, step 2 ck 256, step 2 cs passed, all passed on first attempt. Planning to do step 3 before interview season and travel with documentation that accredits I have taken it.
-Being working in home country during my preparation.
-I have 1 and a half month of usce on private clinic with hands on experience.
-3 US lors from family medicine physicians from the US, which I am confident will be good.
-Possibilities of publishing a paper in a US obesity journal.
-I aim for internal medicine.
What are my chances for matching in a university based program that would allow me to do a fellowship in a competitive sub-specialty and how many programs should I apply for?

Thank you for your help.

You have pretty good chances of getting 10-15 interviews if you apply to 200+ programs.

There are over 100 University-based IM programs and IMG's generally have a much harder job of matching to them than to community-based programs. At least half of them are looking for more USCE experience than you have to offer (at least three months in IM).

I doubt you will be offered a H1B (often reserved for exceptional candidates), better to use your time now in trying to get more clinical experience rather than doing Step 3

I'd also have a back-up plan such as applying to Community-based programs with University affiliations. All in all, I think you should apply to as many programs as possible if you can afford it. Applying widely these days means sending around 150 applications.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but IM is getting more competitive and you are looking to match at a superior program.

Thank you StepTaker.
The interviews you are talking about are only university programs applying to 200 only university programs, or you are referring to 10 to 15 interviews applying to 200 any kind of programs. If you refer to the latter, do you think I have chances for a university based program training?

Thank you eduardod.
I rather have a honest reply than just nice support feedback. I understand your opinion, unfortunately I have to go back to my country and continue working to be able to afford the application and interview process, and according to the fees I've seen and your reply I guess I'll have to work more than I expected. The visa given to me is not an issue, I would take a J1 visa as long it is a good program, just want to get over step 3 as soon as possible, taking in account I've taken step 2 ck over a month ago. I'll keep in mind applying to university affiliated community programs, but my goal is a university based one, and just knowing that I stand a chance, as slim as it may be, I'm going for it.
In your opinion, what is the best way to save money and avoid applying to programs that may be almost impossible to get interviewed by, or should I take the risk and apply, and pray that by some grace I catch their attention.

I admire your determination and am glad to help any way I can. I can give you a list of university based programs ranked according to how hard they are for IMG's to get into. Just send me a PM with you email and I will send you the list. Also, it would be helpful if you could tell me your Medical School.

The lists are personalized based on an individual's scores, USCE and other personal preferences. This is no generic list to post and what is a good list for some candidates will a bad one for others.

Moreover, generic lists are available via Freida.
