Question Should I apply for peds or IM?

Greetings,

I am an IMG f, aiming for 2013 match. My scores are 234,226,214 in 1,2 & 3 respectively. I've cleared all the steps and CS in first attempt. I've done my clerkships in pediatrics (1 month) research elective (2 months).

I'm in a confusion as of now regarding the branch in which I need to build up my profile. I've equal interest in pediatrics & IM. Where do I have more chances of matching ?? Is it in pediatrics or in Internal medicine. Which branch should I concentrate more ???

Great thanks for your help in advance.

Your scores are fine for both the specialties. If your peds clerkship was in the US then there is a very big chance of you getting a residency in Peds. It will also help in your IM application as it would be considered a USCE.
Try doing some work in IM now and see if you like it, you will be able to decide then.
There are also combined 4yr IM/peds residency programs. You can have a look at them as well. But generally these are very competitive and only AMGs get into them.
Family Med also has peds, medicine and OB/Gyn exposure, so you can think of that as well.
Good luck!

Survey of Program Directors show that Research comes bottom of the list of factors which influence the choice of who to call for interview.

Yes. PD's seem to rank research below personal statement and even volunteer activities in terms of ranking a candidate, according to polls.

What polls are you talking about? Can you give us some links.

What I have heard is that personal statements and volunteer activities don't matter that much. What matters the most is your scores. If you are an AMG then your Deans Letter as well, but not in the case of IMGs. After scores is USCE. It could be electives, externships or observerships. Electives are considered better.

Also in big university programs, they do take a look at your research work and if you have published in good journals then that will do a lot of good to your application. But just doing research with no publications for more than 6 months- 1 yr might not look that great. On the other hand some small community programs don't even look at research.

The bottom line is: its only the scores which are universal everywhere. The rest of it all depends on the PD and their policies, which vary in each program

I meant survey rather than polls. Check it out:
http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty.pdf

Most IMG's won't end up in big University programs. But I agree that if you do highlight your research you should have papers and be 1st. author on them.

A great PS won't get you into a program, but a bad one may exclude you. IMG's may show their lack of communication skills and ignorance of American culture in their PS. PD's know this.

USMLE scores are the most important, but an applicant who has a top score and can't communicate or is not a team player will not get into a program.

All programs are not the same, but the Residency process is similar everywhere. This is why the NRMP went to the bother of taking a survey and publishing the results. They show us the driving forces behind their choice of applicants.
