Has anyone else been surprised that they did not receive that many interviews despite having good stats? I am a US IMG with 215 step 1 and 223 step 2 CK and CS pass all on the first attempt. I will be graduating this year. I have only gotten 3 FM interviews. I applied to a good number of programs. Anyone feeling completely shocked?

I wouldn't say your stats are necessarily "good". You're below the average for matching FM candidates. But you have to be optimistic no matter how many invites you get. All you need is that one program to like you enough to rank you highly; 3 is better than none, and invites are still going out. I think by the end of Octobor we should know where we stand.

But according to the most recent NRMP charting outcomes report the average Step 1 score of US IMGs who matched Into FM is 212 and the average step 2 CK is 224. So that would make me good candidate

I'd say it makes you an average candidate, and that's scores wise. There is more to an applicant than just scores. LORs, MSPEs, etc is all taken into account.

I have no interviews so far. I received 8 rejections so far (applied to 114). I am a non-us IMG with 219/236 and no fails. I did my electives in the US, one in FM and another in vascular surgery with good LORs out of both of them; although I am biased, I thought I created a pretty good PS. I graduated December 2015 (here in the southern hemisphere our school year goes from February to December).

So, I thought I was a decent candidate, and yes I am feeling a bit anxious.

Does a supplemental app mean that they are at least remotely interested in interviewing me for an IV? Or is it something that they send out to everyone?

Has anyone tried calling the programs they haven't heard back from yet? If so, what did they say?

It's generally not recommended to request status updates on your application. If they've not sent you an update then they're either still considering your application or they just don't follow up on rejected applications. Either way they probably don't have the information on hand. These people are really busy.

Yes but if you have been rejected, I'm sure they would have that information on hand, especially if all interview slots have been filled, right? If you call them up and ask them the status of your application and they know all interview slots have been filled, they can easily tell you that you've been rejected

I was wondering, since you've applied to many programs, have you heard back from any in Georgia or New Jersey? Any interviews or rejections from those programs?

I didn't apply to many programs, maybe only 85, and I didn't apply to any in Georgia or New Jersey.

FM is not just about stats. We really pay attention to LOR's and PS. We want people who are committed to FM. I am a PGY-2 and I after being more involved in the screening process I can see how important commitment is. We all now that a lot of people apply to FM as a back up and that does not sit well with some PD.
Not saying that you are doing this. My point is FM is not just about numbers.

The other reason why you are not getting invites yet is probably because some programs, especially the ones that are DO and MD certified have been sending interviews to DO candidates first given that their match is earlier.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

So I see you have an interview at a rural program. I have one too. I was wondering if I do end up going to a rural program, will I absolutely have to commit to doing rural practice even after I'm done with residency or can you basically practice in any setting once youre done with the training?

They can't make you work anywhere, but 80% of rural training FMs work in a rural area after graduation. It's very different training and a lot of work above and beyond typical FM residency, since there are a lot of issues that you would handle differently in a tiny hospital that lacks ICUs and specialist access. It's not attractive for everyone. Also, during interviews you've got to establish your interest in rural medicine very firmly. If you don't want to do rural medicine, then it'll probably shine through.

I have a question for those who are are re-applicants this season. When did you all get the majority of your interviews? Were there a significant number of invites in November?

Well you mentioned having failed Step 1 on the first attempt. A lot of programs even say on their website that a failure is unlikely to be considered. And you mentioned having graduated back in 2013. That's also a red flag to many programs as many say on their website that applicants must have graduated in the last 2 years. Also, are you a US citizen? If not, do you have a green card? These are also major factors as most FM residencies want US citizens or green card holders because it's too expensive for them to sponsor visas.

I'm frustrated too...because I don't think I have any red flags on my application except a course I had to repeat in basic sciences, but didn't think that mattered too much. My MSPE is pretty good, so I dunno what else I could've done right

At least is something, I guess last shot will be November. 25 % left is not good, but it's not critical either.

You mentioned having 0 IVs just two days ago...did you get 3 invites in one day? and what do you mean exactly when you say unofficial vs official?

Thats good man!...After carefully examining the data, I now see that 4 IVs in FM should give you decent shot at matching for US IMGs. For Non-US IMgs, the number is lower. I think it's all about how you perform in the IVs you do have

http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploa...-IMGs-2016.pdf

Page 7

So you can see that half of Us IMgs who matched into FM ranked 4 programs or fewer. And for Non-US IMGs, they ranked 3 or fewer. So we all still have a shot!!

Do programs contact you to tell you that you have been placed on the waitlist?

I only have 6 rejections even though I applied to 110 programs. Hope that mean something good. Its crazy I cant believe how some of you have 30 already. Hope we all get more IV this month.

Is it just me or is this season unusually slow? I've applied to 130 programs, but have only received 10 rejections.

You have a very unique score set, which can be used to identify you if the right/wrong person saw it.

Attended this year's AAFP Conference, and apparently ya, they are often on these forums and have gone as far as stalking people's Facebook, instagram and even "catfishing" them by pretending to be students on here. you are a prime example of why

No issues though and no hatred I just have to stay positive. My motto is I hope EVERYONE matches we all have a story we all tried hard as heck to get here I know so many people who because of finances, cant pass the steps, family issues, pregnancies, etc. you name it cant do this.

Even our own Liquidswords had an accident last year after applying and getting many IV's he didn't quit and is on track to hopefully match this year. These people I commend.

Good luck guys

"being rubbed the wrong way" is no excuse for threatening TO KILL SOMEONE, calling them a "fu***** B*tch", "c*nt", and a "wh*re". if being rubbed the wrong way is all it takes for you to go off on people like this, you need some serious professional help.

Thanks Sara! I've been e-mailing PD's for the past few days but I'm sure they are swamped with e-mails. If I don't hear back I'll try again in a few weeks. I don't have any red flags on my application so hopefully it's just a matter of time.

Julia don't panic. You know I have a lot of friends in that boat also and really so many AMG's cancel IV around Thanksgiving / Before XMas given that they are exhausted and have like 30. I have a prime example of a FM friend who got IV's after Thanksgiving and matched. Another friend got 3 IV in Dec and 2 in JAN and matched! The season is not over.

I'm with you Sarabear. It's words like those that hurt women in the workforce and beyond. I am so over the aggressiveness of indecent men and the passivity of the good ones. Human decency should the first trait required in our field.

what are the chances of getting interviews from community programs that have waitlisted you?

Good question answer is HIGH ) it's almost like getting an iv esp before the holidays that's when people cancel congrats and good luck. In amg forums some are holding on and canceling if now they get more reputable IVs to supplement given that you can't go to them all.

I've got a few classmates who are Canadian and have been to a few programs with Canadians in previous classes. My classmates have good scores but aren't getting IVs, so I asked some PD's about it. It seems like there has been in a shift in attitude towards students needing visas. I've been hunting for data to figure it out but it's not forthcoming. FM tends to be dominated by USIMGs traditionally anyway, so maybe programs are finally seeing a critical mass of applicants where they can fill their program and don't need to gamble on a student who will have to scramble to get a visa after matching. This is 100% anecdotal and I don't mean to be discouraging, but this issue as it specifically applies to Canadians has been preoccupying me this week.

Cheers

I've gotten many IVs and rejections but it's kinda hard to keep the group lively with a lot of negativity. Seems like misery does love company in this context!

This week has been silent for me except for a rejection from St. Elizabeth NEOMED earlier this week. I think things have slowed down, for the most part. Hoping that some programs have cancellations and start sending invites again at the end of the month.
