Calendar Delay to September 26 with CK results or apply before?

I have a quick question. I would like to apply for the 2013 match but still have to take my step 2 ck. Since the new changes in august i am a lil worried. I wont be able to take my exam before that. So Should i wait and get my results near sept 26th and than apply or should i go ahead and apply on sept 15th and update my score?
thank you so much.

What is your Step 1 score and what are you applying for? It makes a big difference.

Hi Eduardod,
Thanks for the reply.
Can you please elaborate how step 1 score and the specialty of choice would make a difference in the absence of a CK score?

PD's use the Step 1 score as the first filter to identify those who they might like to call for interview. A mediocre Step 1 score and no Step 2 will make you look like a risky prospect. Good or bad scores are related to specialty too. Average matching score for non-US seniors in Psychiatry is 209, while in IM it is 225 (2011 figures).

I would suggest you wait until you get the CK score. A delay in application until late September or early October this year won't make a drastic difference in the face of delayed ERAS opening specifically this year.

While what eduardod mentioned is true (Step 1 has more weight), nevertheless applying with complete profile makes more competitive and maximizes your chances of getting interviews.

It is a question of which is more advantageous: a complete application or an early application?

Getting in early is good since Program Directors are competing for candidates. But an incomplete application may eliminate you from the cut. But I suppose you could apply early and then contact the programs to make sure that they noticed you had an updated Step 2 score.

Advice from more experienced heads, please.

Ed.

Default what do they mean by 'early' august?

the news on usmle.org says that people who take CK in early august will get their result after 26th september.. so what do you think do they mean by early?

I think noone knows the exact dates, but honestly I believe that it's not going to cause much of a problem. Think about this...

1. Thousands of applicants would be affected by this. This would be brought into the attention of program directors and they are not so ruthless that if one's application is recieved on 27th, they wont even look at it.
2. For CK it's Sept 26. For even a larger number of applicants, CS is coming on Oct 3 and later!! So you and others are in a better position if you compare it to them, however I still feel PDs will be aware of the CS delay too and will screen again after that. By time your result would 99.9% be out!
3. Every year we hear examples of people who applied late and got matched. I heard from a fellow today only that she got matched even though she applied in Nov.

So be calm and focus on CK. Don't loose focus of what's important and keep the spirits up and frown upside down

Good Luck!

Warning! Stressed; please help!

Hey guys, unfortunately I will be changing my CK date to Sept 10 . I'm just not ready to take it. This means (I think) the results will be out Oct 10. Should I upload my application once I have my result (Oct 10/11) OR should I upload it anyway without the CK result (Sept 15)? Will my application look incomplete? Will my CK score be shown as pending? Will Program Directors automatically get my score once its out? I have passed Step 1 and CS; I'm still in med school.

I would really appreciate some insight!!!!

Can you please tell me from where you came to know that if you take the test on Sept 10 then the results will come out on Oct 10?

I was actually just assuming the 3-4 week rule will apply . Do you have any idea when the result will come out if I take my Step 2 CK on the 10th? Are you also taking it then?

I am not sure yet. Prep is not going as planned

Last email conversation that I had with ECFMG, they mentioned that if we take the exam in 1st week of September, then the results will take 4-6 weeks
Since there will be substantial backlog of results, I am guessing that it would take 5 weeks minimum.

I have sent them another email, but they take 15 working days to reply, that's like 3 weeks

I think you should give them a call.
