Default Indian IMG in med school - is this doable? Pls Help

I am a US Citizen currently in my third year of med school in India. I am currently preparing for Step 1, and am planning on taking it this coming Jan/Feb (when i will be in fourth year). My expected score based on the NBMEs i've taken is mid 250s. My current plan is this: Take Step 1 in Jan/Feb 2017 Prep for Step 2, research etc during 2017 Do externships/electives Jan-April 2018 Write step 2 and apply for 2018 cycle Graduate in March/April 2019 (officially) I have talked to school administrators and they will allow me to delay my intern year by a couple of months after final year ends, so i can take time off and do electives jan-april of 2018. My doubts are this: -will i be able to do electives because i will have completed fourth year but not technically graduated (i.e not done intern year)? will this keep me eligable for electives or do i have to do externships? -do places offer electives in jan, feb, march? I tried looking this up but most places seem to start electives in may, june, august, etc. Do any indian IMGs have experience getting a residency without taking a year off? Most of my seniors seem to have done this but i really dont want to just waste a year......

Sounds like a solid plan you have there. Most schools that offer electives in the US are on a monthly basis throughout the year. Jan-June is a good time to do them since there are more slots open (less local students). And the requirement is that your are in your LAST year of medical school regardless whether it is 3, 4 or 5 or whatever. Just keep in mind that there are only a few medical schools that take IMGs (I found ~10) and some do not take US citizen IMGs. Of course if you go with the private companies then it's a different story but I wouldn't recommend it.

Cheers!
