Default Applying without ECFMG certificate

Hello everyone,

I'm an IMG done with step 1, step 2 CK and step 2 CS, But I won't be ECFMG certified until at least late SEP / early OCT because of problems with the credentials verification, final diploma .... etc.
How much does it hurt the applicant to apply without being ECFMG certified?? should I apply mid September and notify the programs when I'm ECFMG certified, or wait until I'm ECFMG certified and apply ?? Should I just forget about this year's match and prepare for next year??

Any input is appreciated.

Thank you!

As far as I know you want to be ECFMG certified on the day of the Match. ECFMG released a letter a couple of months ago saying that people hoping to take part in the 2017 Match should take all their steps before the end of 2016 so ECFMG would have enough time to issue candidates with their certificate (if candidates are successful). Also, lots of candidates are not able to provide programs with their Step 2 scores (for interviews) as they take CK & CS later in the year. This is why the step 1 score can be important as programs only have this score to evaluate a candidate. So i think you can apply now ! Hope that helps

This is not true for international graduates though. IMGs will find it incredibly hard to get interviews with just step 1 score, even if its exceptional. Almost all programs require IMGs to be done with step 1, cs and ck before considering them for interviews.
Though its preferred that you are ECFMG certified when you apply, the deadline for ECFMG certification for most programs is by rank order list (Feb 2017). Depending on your scores and profile, you will still interviews without being certified (though maybe slighter lower than with certification)

Hi Saxo,

you're gonna find this funny when I tell you that I'm actually an IMG ! I just passed step 1 and will take both step 2 exams in December 2016. I'm hopping to participate in the 2017 Match. Some people told me it was doable so I decided to at least try. I have done a little research but it is never enough and one always finds that detail that's gonna make everything more complicated. Would you mind helping & describing briefly the process of applying for residency programs ?
When do you start applying ? Mid Sept 2016 ?
When is the last day to send applications ?
How do you actually apply ? I heard of a website where you make your application but I do not know how you actually apply for programs ? Is it obvious once you visit that website ?
Interviews are held in Oct/Nov, right ?
What do you consider the best source of info for finding a program ?
Does "not being called for an interview" mean that the program will never pick you ?

I understand there are probably lots of things that I'm not aware of so do not hesitate (you or sb else reading that thread) to add useful info. Hopefully this thread will help everybody. Thank you and good luck !

No problem buddy.
The application process starts from 6th September this year (the programs can download and view applications from 15th September)
The last date to send applications is variable. Many programs state in their website that they accept applications till November. Few might accept them till December but beyond that its close to impossible to apply and be called for interviews.
You apply through MyERAS. Its a website where you can build on each part of your application (personal statement, CV, etc) and apply to programs. You need to purchase an ERAS token via OASIS from ECFMG and register the token with MyERAS to be able to access the website. You can search and save the programs you want to apply to in the website.
Interviews are usually held from first week of October to middle of January.
The best source for finding information about programs is FREIDA online.
Yes, if you are not called for interviews the program will never consider you placing you on rank order list

Thanks guys I guess I'll just apply mid September, and hope I don't get filtered out by many programs due to the lack of ECFMG certification.
