New poster here

201/222/CS/US-IMG/top 7.5% of class/YOG 2017

So far, 4 rejections. Geisinger, Colorado, Tennessee, Vermont

Anyone know if it would be beneficial to start emailing program directors at this point expressing interest/checking the status of my application?

I think it's might be time to start sending emails. I was looking at Student Doctor Network forum. It seems that some of the programs are already full or almost full.

Psych is just too competitive, especially for below average applicants like me. Compared to Pathology, Psych programs have received more than double the applications for the number of PGY1 positions.

Do you think psych is more competitive than FM? I know IM has become super competitive as well. Many of the rejection emails I'm getting are saying 'we have far too many applications for our spots, sorry'. Only 1 was a rejection from a committee.

Aside from Path are there any other specialties less competitive than psych?

FM is less competitive only if you are a recent grad especially from Caribbean school and don't require a visa. If you look at the program director survey on the NRMP website you'll see the FM programs receive as many applications if not more as psych. But, they screen out 66% of applications even before looking at them compared to 53% in psych. Also, FM programs IV and rank only 49% of non-US IMGs compared to psych (67%).
Apart from path I don't know which other specialty is less competitive than psych right now.

Compared to IM there are far less number of seats for FM & Psych.

Good luck to all and I am positive that there will be IVs for all of us soon.

I think PDs are swamped with a record number of applications this year, hence the delay.

One of the rejection email mentioned that they have received over 5000 applications !

There are far too many IMGs applying to psych as a backup or safety. On SDN some attendings mentioned that they are trying to screen out people with decent scores who don't have a background or interest in psych.

5000! I know abt ppl having psych as a back up option but screening that big number is a humongous task. I have repeatedly read pd always look for candidates with genuine interest in psych..hoping that turns in our favour

5000!? Are you sure? Because the PCs or PDs that I have communicated with mentioned receiving applications in the range of 1100 to 1300 this year.

I am shocked that I haven't received a single iv yet. With 233/225/pass I thought I would at least get something from the 100+ programs that I applied. I've gone over my application multiple times thinking that I made a mistake somewhere, but if so I don't see it.
So far, rejections from: UCLA, UCSF, Indiana university, Geisinger, and San Mateo County Behavioral. TO be fair, all of these programs were kind of a stretch, and the ones that are more likely to accept IMGs haven't contacted me one way or another, but still...

I should have been more clear. It was from Internal Medicine, Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, New York.

Dear applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our program and for giving us the opportunity to review your application.

Our residency selection committee has reviewed your application for residency training. We regret to inform you that we will not be able to offer you an interview at this time.
The residency selection committee looks at your academic record, exam profile, personal statement and letters of recommendations. As we received more than 5,000 applications this year, it is obvious that we cannot interview all eligible applicants.

We wish you success in achieving your professional goals.

Sincerely,

Saint George is the best and most exspensive caribbean school.. Did you apply to Family Med or Internal Med? I know some people from Saint George who applied this year to Internal Med with your similar marks and each have about 2 intervies. This clearly prooves Psych has become more cometitive then Internal Med.

Did anyof you guys see this post on facebook?
For non-U.S. citizen students and graduates of international medical schools (“Non-U.S. IMG”), the top five specialties/specialty tracks were:
 Internal Medicine (categorical) (2,013)
 Family Medicine (382)
 Pediatrics (categorical) (250)
 Neurology (categorical, advanced, and physician positions) (188)
 Surgery-Preliminary (PGY-1 Only) (177)
PS: For IMG's requiring a visa, only 132 students matched to Psychiatry, which is the LOWEST number in a long long time and that's why it's not in the top 5. Psychiatry has become really really competitive in the last 2-3 years.

How many psych LORs do you have? Did you do your electives in psych? Looking at the list psychedelic has up there are people with lower scores who have interviews.

Do you have any major red flags?

Just caught up on the discussions. I thought IM or FM would be less competitive too...I guess I was wrong.
My updates from contacting programs these days:
Boston VA: doesn't accept anyone who graduated after 2014, very firm. Although their websites says within 5 years after graduation OR residency
Hofstra Zuckerhill: More than 1400 applications this year, doesn't seem to be very hopeful.

Good news that I got a call yesterday and my rejection from Toledo turned into IV! I did contact them after receiving the rejection more than 2 weeks ago and they said they were gonna look into it. Finally!

For programs that I haven't heard from I say that I'm checking my application status.
For Toledo: At that time since they sent out a checklist of their requirements when sending out the rejection, I simply asked them if I failed to meet any criteria on the checklist, since I didn't see any.
I believe others have done so too. So maybe they misclassified some applications and if you tell them, they'll double check.

But think about this... IM with 1400 applications, but many internal programs have about 12 spots or more. Psych 800-1200 appliancts for 4-6 spots.

Alomst 2x as many psych applicatns per residency spot then IM per spot.

IM has a better chance

Since pathology is tested in step 1, PDs prefer a good step 1 score at least.

What's a good step 1 score for Pathology and what are the job prospects?
I am thinking of applying for it as a backup.

I know someone who had 210 on Step 1 and 212 on Step 2 and matched Path last year. But she always wanted Path, she even did a Path masters while waiting to match. All her electives were in Path and she had a Path publication.

Job prospects are not so good if you want to work in a major city, but there are jobs in rural and smaller cities. Pay is decent.
