So you want to give step 1 in April 2017 and want to do electives in August or September 2017? You may be electives but that is hard. Usually people apply in November or December for electives in August of next year. These months are tougher to get (generally speaking) compared to winter months (Oct to Jan)

There are many options to find electives without a step 1 score, I took step 1 two years after doing electives.

I may not recollect all of that, but I do believe that after you take step 1 you can opt for electives that dont cost anything. It will definitely help if you finished step 1 but as I see it, it is not a good idea to rush with any step for an USCE.
Also, a lot of people who did electives with me had finished step 1 and were accepted for fewer(1) electives than I did. Also they took up surgery, peds electives etc when they wanted IM.

I strongly urge you to do an extensive search by yourself, there are many places that offer electives. For eg, I did not know that Rush University had an elective program until I randomly emailed them.

If you have any questions regarding your elective application ..do not hesitate to ask me, PM me anytime. I did a lot of research in that process and would like it if someone else benefited from all those efforts.
