Default Concerned about my USMLE scores...someone please help!

Hey guys,

I just finished my four years of medical school and I am slowly getting ready for the 2013 match. I have to be honest...I've been getting really stressed out about this residency match and I'm worried about how my future will turn out for next year. I'm a bit concerned about my USMLE scores because I know those are what program directors look at when giving interviews. I got 227(98) on step 1, 213(90) on step 2 ck, and passed cs. In fact, I passed all my board exams on first attempt, and I did fairly well throughout my clinical rotations. I'm a bit upset about my ck score because I feel I could've done better in it. I was under so much stress when studying for ck, especially when doing my rotations at the same time. And now I'm not sure how I'll do with the matching process when I compete with those who have even better board scores. I am planning to get into IM and will also apply to family med as a backup. I understand that, as an IMG student, I probably won't match into a university hospital. But I really want to get into a good community hospital program, and I feel that my step 2 score may hurt my chances. Can someone please tell me what are my chances of getting interviews and matching and what I can do to improve my chances? Will the program directors ignore my step 1 score and reject me just because of my step 2 score? Is my step 2 score really that bad compared to my step 1 score? This is something that has been bothering me for quite a while now, and I would really appreciate any honest input. Thanks!

Need more details on your application profile as scores aren't the only thing that matter.

Visa?
Type of USCE? Length?
Research / Publications?
Any red flags?

Will need J1 visa since I'm from Canada.
Did all my clinical rotations in United States.
No research or publications.
No red flags as far as I know.

Looks good then, only "red flag" is the visa.

If you can, try and get some sort of research or publication, otherwise scores are okay, you have relevant us clinical experience, and hopefully good LOR's.

Default Apply widely

Your Step 2 score is a bit borderline. The average Step 2 score for non-US seniors who matched in 2011 was 228. However your score won't deal you a knockout blow since it is still within the range of matching Step 2 scores.

There are over 150 Community Hospital with University Affiliations programs in IM. I'd apply to as many of them as I can. Bolster your application with good LOR's. Hopefully, that will get you over the winning line.
