My stats:
YOG 2009
Step 1- 196
Step 2- 218
CS- PASS
All first attempt
ECFMG Certified
US Citizen
USCE 29 months (If they count observerships/externsdhip in a private clinic where i did get hands on experiance though )
Research- 3 months in a university program, clinical research with 2 papers being written for submission but in the LOR I got from my supervisor she wrote them down as in the process of submission.
LORs - 3 US LORS, 2 from the clinics I worked in (1 each) and the 3rd from my research supervisior the research LOR is very strong while the other 2 are good but nothing amazing.

I had applied to over 200 programs (yes a whole **** load of money but i dont want to take any chances ) 98 IM and i forget the ratio of FM to peds I applied to. I made sure that all the programs i applied to that I met their minimum criteria (atleast according to matcharesident and the hospital website).

Anyway I know my scores are not good but its all I got so heres hoping tht some program sees more in me than just my low scores. Guys what do you think are my honest chances in IM?

no confidence, I am serious. I hope you applied to the programs geared for US-IMG with green card or citizenship, is like 50% of the programs are like this.

Your chances are good.
Pros: Good step1 score, no visa required.
cons: Step2 score
...but having said that you have good chances, try to get more USCE's.
(This is all from my experience talking to people who have matched)

Shima, I have a question:

Why are chances higher at those places that don't sponsor visa? I thought they would be even more competitive since AMGs may apply at those places as well. I'm just asking because it would seem that a US IMG can apply broadly including and not limited to places that only accept citizens/residents of US.

Anyway, I hope you're right about it.

Take it as it comes. Speculation either raises your hopes up and disappoints you or worries you when you have nothing to worry about

Step 1 - 228 (first attempt)
Step 2 CK - waiting results september 26th
Step 2 CS - passed in first attempt
Have not taken step 3 yet
ECFMG certification as soon as my ck is passed (credentials verified)
YOG - 2011 end of the year so <1 year.
2 months hands-on clinical experience at a great University program
4 US LOR's.
need visa
will apply the 26th with all my scores if i win ck.
*know Spanish (native)

I think everybody is a great candidate! we all have our deficits and strengths, it's just a matter of what each program requires. All the best, this is a hard process.

Anyway, I hope you're right about it.
I think he means community programs that dont sponsor visas. Because generally US grads will get many university program interviews even with low scores. If a community program doesn't sponsor visas, the competition (from basically most of the IMG's from India lol) is eliminated and we are basically only competing with other foreign grads who are US citizens, a much smaller group! Thats my understanding anyway.

St peter's sent a lot of acknowledgement emails to different candidates in the last 2 days. Is yours an acknowledgement or an IV, because some people had confused them with IVs/acceptance.

opened my ADTS today.

letter reads: Congratulations! ( OMG wohoo!) your app has been selected & reviewed by the committee as of this moment. We will update you bla blah blah...

why did they put "congratulations" as an intro.

wooo-saaahh... positive vibes.:sorry:

So far, we are the only ones who need visa:

247/247 alimak
251/244 ashake3009
207/217 Blingbang
212/222 doctorrr
246/236 doctorsmonsters
248/261 hopetomatch2013
228/---- LatinGeorge
226/207 mustafa
214/230 rickybhimani31
254/250 umajeed90
229/226 Yatap

I hope someone creates a separate thread for FMGs since we all know, IMGs and FMGs are not given equal footing.

I agree tol, Ashake has 1month CLERKSHIP versus umajeed90's observership.
Anyway if they receive an interview invite while I dont, I'll take it as a rejection hehe..
From now on, ill subscribe to these people's invites since we are all in the same boat.

:sorry: I realized the hierarchy of credentials for IMG/FMG goes like this:

Contacts/LoR from the same program >Visa >USCE >Scores
*except maybe if you have stellar 250-260s
PS,MSPE and transcript are non-variables!

No offense Yatap, but that's a statement based simply on NOTHING. People are just freaking out because the non-visa requiring candidates are getting IVs early from the programs which don't offer visas..but from the ones that do offer visas, no one is getting anything...
People with 250s n 260s always get more and earlier IVs as compared to the 230s n 240s...this has always been the norm...
the IV month (october) isn't even here and members of this forum have already started to complain..dude, this goes for every system in the world, not just in USA. EVERY COUNTRY prefers to have their nationals in the system as compared to visa requiring candidates including India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Dubai...
As a non-visa requiring IMG, i can also complain about the fact that AMGs are given preference over me, but they deserve to be given that preference dude..i can also complain about not getting an IV (despite high scores) in one of the ivy league programs like JH or MGH while AMGs with lower scores do, but i prefer to be satisfied with what i get, instead of complaining about what i dont.

Thanks for calling me a winning horse, but i am not so sure.....

Also i would like to apologize for being slightly untrue, my real step2 score is 253. 244 was my NBME 4 score, which i had posted at that time. When my step 2 score came on Aug 15, i could not re-edit the post, so sorry for lying.

I did get an IV today, it was from St Barnabas NYC.

guys dont freak out.....this is early ...only some of the non visa sponsoring and some good program sending IV.....even 3 of my programs have not downloaded application....everyone will have chance...i have some visa seeking friends who got IV...there are not in this forum....what you see here is just ..a part of the things going on....
shazaib credentials is very good what we can see...people like him gets 20 IVs ....and univ prog too...and plus he has GC..it's obvious...

did a lecture from kaplan with an ex PD. he said when 3000 apps arrived to him, this is what he'll do(separation, filtration, etc): AMG/IMG>scores>visa>USCE>all other stuff. in half a days time, he will have about 500+ qualified apps which will then be reviewed entirely by the committee.

if my hunch is right, PS is also a big variable. i'll see if it's true, as i have a good one.

I agree. Dr. Conrad Fischer who has years of experience in this field mentioned the exact same thing in his blog and videos. You can find them on youtube.

Have not taken step 3 yet

2 months hands-on clinical experience at a great University program
4 US LOR's. from University program.

Step 2 CS result awaited in October

YOG=2008 march

USCE= about 3 mo of observership at community hospital

Research work= one research from my homeland but nt published.no research in USA.

VISA= not needed.
Now what r my chances in IM n FM...??
In programs that DONT, I repeat DONT sponser VISA your chances are good. other than that, IM New YORK and IM in Massachu, IM in Kansas , Arkansa.

Apply to all IM and FM in New York and MA, AK, KS now. then apply to other places. right there you have over 120 programs.

Apply to as many img friendly programs in NYC/NJ/PA area, if you have >260 in either step, chances are you will match for sure...

We are FMGs to be specific.

@ dr.JPRizal

dude don't get embarrassed, you should never be apologetic for your success. It is great that you got those IVs and I hope that you do great!! It is just an observation I made; more and more people should know about it, so that they plan their usmle accordingly. Best of luck man..... great going!!

awesome you got those IVs....

@geekmd
got your point man, so for a FMG to stay competitive it is imperative that he gets super high scores i.e.>260;even 250 are not going to be helpful.

Only then will a pd think of picking someone with paperwork issues!!

FMG applying for IM with scores of 220s...
IMG applying for Anes with scores of 220s....
AMG applying for radio/derma with scores of 220s.

...........All are possible but VERY difficult.

Damn, I should have applied to FM rather than IM.

Default Don't worry

Cool down guys, I know we are a bit desperate for invitations to come. But it still early, I am pretty sure we stand a good chance for match, I have seen that there are pretty good scores and profiles, so let's hold on together. October will be our month, I am positive.
