categorical could be a hospitalist track or a primary care track. we commonly associate categ w/ hospitalist, but it could also mean categorical primary care track.
i too have applied to a categorical program, but then the invite said "welcome to blah blah program known for excellent primary care training..."

also there is no really big difference among the two. the only difference is on where the bulk of their training will be. hospitalist 70% inpatient 30% outpatient, primary care 70% outpx 30% inpx.

this got me confused when i did my rotations. the primary care doctors i am under, where working as hospitalist (ICU & ER) on weekends. so i asked them & they said they are only covering for the hospitalist who is off on weekends (plus they get some extra chips). so both are still capable of doing either.

I am an IMG .
YOG-2011 Nov
Step 1- 244
step 2 ck- 256
step 2 cs- taken (scores on Oct 10th)
4 months of observership with 4 US letters, 3 really good ones.
No research in US. Have a few research in Home country and few conference presentations (oral + posters)
Visa- will need J1 or H1.

What are the chances of me gettings ivs. I applied for 176 programs.
Will this delay in Step 2 CS scores put me in a situation of not gettings many or any ivs at all?

IMO it will definitely help them picture you as a professional, smart, capable doctor.
ergo my friends from iran, chezch & libya (during my rotation) had their photo done with a professional photographr. $100-150. (couldnt go that high, just got myself a cheaper studio photo)
miss those crazy guys, had good laughs with them.
i Asked a PD, and a chief resident about this. Now hear this

The photo is used at the time of ranking.

And if it does come down to the photo and you being ranked lower and higher than I must say congrats. Your matched or your ranked.

Also one more thing

the program will rank everyone they like and see fit, maybe 120 people for 8 position maybe 5 people for 12 position.

this year because of lack of prematch , they interviewing more and ranking even more.

I am sure everyone in this forum will get matched. just watch and mark me on this.

Oh, if i remember correctly, he has an extremely good score in CK, and below average in step 1 right? With multiple publications, posters and a book? I guess the only weakness in his application is step1 score and YOG...they probably filtered him based on YOG

yeah i put mad bcoz its frustrating to get rejected. but i put also a laughing emoticon to imply that receiving those is not the end of the world & better be just cool with it rather than drown in anxiety, depression or stress.
as you can see, i usually post my rejection after someone has a rejection received to make him feel better, that he/she isn't the only one receiving those. i've also avoid posting about any new IVs received as it can aggravate more the negative emotions felt by others.
im sorry that you interpreted it the wrong way. am just trying to keep everyone's morale & optimism and cheer em up, and not for any other thing.
pessimism & negativity draws bad things, positivity & faith draws hope & success.

Hey dr.JPRizal,I did not take it wrong.I am sorry, I may have put it wrong, but my intention was to project in lighter tone, but probably did the opposite.I do acknowledge that you have played a positive role in this thread.I am really happy for you and all those who got IVs and I know the drawbacks in my CV and am fine with whatever I deserve, but shall keep trying and hope for the best. You have been outstanding...so good on you and my apologies if I have sounded pessimistic or something like that.Keep your good work and don't worry we all are sensible enough to handle pressures,so you can post about your success at will.

hey you don't have to apologize doc.mav.. were good.
im kinda numb with that kind of stuff & my cool is that high, thanx to my pathetic hosp where humiliation, scolding & harsh criticism is a norm for a clerks/interns/residents' life.

guys, the reason for posting interviews/rejections/confirmations is not to impress or depress other members..we are posting them to give others an idea about their own application status. By comparing the individual's credentials and IVs he/she got, people can have a pretty good idea about the type of candidates that specific program prefers. For example, there are candidates (with lower scores than mine) in this thread who got IVs from programs I've applied to as well (but didn't get any IV from) and that has given me the idea that, for those programs, Research is probably even more important than score (i don't have any research experience)..so guys, lets all work in a mutually beneficial relationship..now isn't the time to freak out.

Have you guys started calling programs yet? Somebody told me I should start calling New York programs as they do everything earlier than others.

I don't think its going to help you...But i tried to to call 3-4 programs...they really don't want to talk...regarding these...And what are you going to say them?If you have better opening sentence then please share ..beacuse i was completely sad after few tries..
If they take call ..those are for those, whom they have called for IV right now..
If you ask..
they says we have above 4000 applicants and everybody is qualified , we are reviewing orderly and if they have already reviewed your application they say we have many more potential candidates besides you this year, we will let you if we find you eligible, this is until they send you rejection....

Yeah, I was reading last years Match in IM thread on usmleforums and everyone that matched were really freaking out even in late November. I don't think you guys should worry, in march you can look back at all these threads and laugh because you matched but the process was terrifying.

Question Might be a silly question, but...

When a program sends you an e-mail saying "we are pleased to find your application among our applicants... We are busy reviewing applications... Please do not interpret the silence from us over the next month to be lack of interest"
Are they just following a standard procedure, are they being polite, are they somewhat interested, should we wait for a future rejection, or what?

This process has me on an emotional roller coaster...

that's an acknowledgement that they received your app & they're going to review it. you could receive either rejection or invite in the near future.

Which pograms are more competitive?
Community based program.
Or Community Hospital affiliated to University

I really don't understand the difference between these two.Any one can clear this doubt..

Thanks

Well done on your success! Could you remind me again of your scores/qualifications and of where you have got interviews? Also, you said you applied to about 1/3 university programs. How did you divide up the type of programs you applied for? This info is very useful, thanks.

IMO generally speaking UNIV affiliated programs are more competitive.....but having said that it depends a lot on individual programs. There are lot of community programs which are very very competitive and also have great chances for further fellowship opportunities.

In IM, Community hospital with University affiliations are the most numerous of the different types of programs, where they constitute just over 50% of the total. But those are the type of programs which take the greatest percentage of IMG's. I've heard that the University association isn't often that strong (how true this is, I don't know), but in many cases it undoubtedly is.

What you are wearing?--Color of the suit , tie , shirt, shoes?
How you prepared for your IV?--get the website and some pet questions ready..

Sure Ed.
254 / 261 / Pass / not giving step3 / YOG 2011 / don't need visa / USCE- 2 months clinical electives, 12+ months private clinic externships / 6 LORs - 5US, 1 non-US / no publication
IVs - Coney island NY, St Agnes Baltimore, Florida Hospital Orlando, Easton Hospital PA, LSU Shreveport LA, UT southwestern Austin, SIU Springfield IL.
In my list about 1/3rd are Uni-based, 1/3rd are Uni-affiliated, 1/3rd are Community based. But its a rough estimate, as there are some programs for which Frieda has no information.

oh sorry to hear that! A friend of mine simply couldn't find a date. But I think slots will become available later as some of the prematch programs will take some applicants and the applicants will cancel the interviews.

No some programs are going to fill all their slot by prematches. Like St. Barnabas and VAMC Bronx. I think around 10 programs are going all prematch.

Do you have the full list of prematch only programs? Also, do you have a link to where this information is?

Thanks,

Here is how to find out, go to Freida:
https://freida.ama-assn.org/Freida/u...ogramSearch.do

click choose specialty, click Internal Medicine, click continue with search. Choose location, then click "choose optional criteria", in the "national resident matching program" drop down menu, choose "do not participate in NRMP", then click search. This brings up 15 programs! These are the programs not participating in NRMP and hence will be offering prematches.
Here is the list:
Internal Medicine California Kaiser Permanente Southern California Program
Fontana, California 140-05-00-902
Maryland National Capital Consortium Program
Bethesda, Maryland 140-23-11-013
