Fire Thread 2013 Internal Medicine Residency Matching Applicants

Well,

This is my first post, read almost all the post in this forum and have seen many and met many IMGs in last couple of months, Last year a lot IMGs got unmatched ...a lot of repeat applicant. more of non US-IMG..(with exception to Caribbeans who get match easily if they have scores cutoff..)

The previous year thread was here
2012 Internal Medicine Residency Matching Applicants

Their scores were better than mine profile, But I am not sure about the overall profile I think which matters most..
So i think IM position for IMG is Shrinking..its now time to shift to Pediatric!!
this thread could be useful to the applicant of future and current applicant..So that people dont end unmatched..
I am posting my Profile and i encourage others to do so, to discuss how to make i better..

Default IM chances: general reply

Let's look at 2011 IM data (taken from 'Charting outcomes of the Match 2011' an NRMP publication):

Average Step 1 score of non-US seniors (students) who matched: 225.
Average Step 1 score of non-US seniors (students) who DID NOT match: 211.
Step 2 is 228 and 214.

Non-Us senior who matched ranked about 6 programs. The non-matchers ranked 2 or 3. I'm guessing that the matchers got about 6 interviews. So, I imagine that the group who matched with an average score of about 225 applied to about 150 programs, since I believe that about 150 applications should get an IMG about 6 or 7 interviews.

Conclusion: Scores on both steps over 220 and wide application mean excellent chance.

Don't forget other factors too. On average matchers had a few months of USCE, and some sort and some Research/Publication experience.

Ed.

With all due respect ,i dont think real life situation is dependent on some chart and statistics ,its very different.

matching is not only a score game ,i had a talk to one of the program directors(from New Orleans) ,he told me as far as scores are concerned they only see your score is more than a cut off they r using for the program .they see many things usce , lors most importantly they see the applicant and his attitude .

I agree that attitude and personal presentation are very important, especially at the interview stage. But the Step scores are especially important for IMG's, since PD's can't really evaluate their Medical School Education.

Furthermore, all the data does show that there is a correlation between scores and matching.

I also acknowledged the importance of LOR's and USCE

I've been wondering whether programs are flexible with their requirements - e.g., what are the chances of a program that wants 6mo USCE looking at your app or offering an interview if you have 4-5 with amazing LORs? Has anyone had any experience with that?

How about places that want 2mo of USCE but no observerships, and you have 6 of observerships backed up by strong letters from faculty?

Basically I'm just wondering whether or to apply to these programs anyway and hope that they might look at my app, or to skip them altogether and save money.

They are flexible. An IMG with high scores will definitely get noticed. A step failure will go against you. But it is all relative. It depends on the program, the quality of other applicants and prior experience with IMG's.

Thanks for the insight. I have pretty high scores and am aiming high.

The websites of some of these programs try and sell them like they are the best programs in the US, but when you check their residents roster they are full of IMGs (some only 20%, some 100% IMG). I have a little trouble believing all of these IMGs fulfill their so called requirements, so I might apply to a few of those. I might remove a few just to save some cash.

So long as I get past the "observership is not USCE" filter I should be fine at a lot of places if they get a look at the rest of my ERAS app and my letters - I was just wondering on how likely it would be for them to be flexible with the requirements...

Write me a PM with your scores and the specialty you are applying for and I will give you a more candid evaluation, if you like. If not just post the details here. Frankly you might be a bit misguided. I think programs with 100% IMG personnel are very, very rare indeed. Also, some IMG are very highly qualified indeed and many will have done rotations in the US.

Default another profile for the pile :)

So here's me in a nutshell. Are there any other graduating students out there who are getting ready for the match process? There are programs out there that only need you to be certified by the time you START, which means us students should have all the steps in when we apply, and then graduate and be certified and start. I know someone from my school who matched like that, it is possible

Applying to IM and FM, any geographic area is good!

SCHOOL
- In Europe
YOG- 2013 June
USMLE STEP 1 248 (1st attempt)
USMLE STEP 2 CK-254 (1st attempt)
USMLE CS- 1 time pass
ECFMG cert. upon graduation.
STEP 3 - can't take it yet
USCE- I have my last year at a hospital with ACGME residencies rotating there. 10 months by the time I graduate, 3 and a half months done by the big day, Sept. 15.
Research and publication- basic science research from undergrad and med school both involving very many laboratory animals.
VISA - US citizen
LoRs- 1 FM, 4 IM so far
Repeat Applicant- nope, first time applicant

Good luck to all you prospective matching ladies and gents, and let's hope this first all-in year treats us well. Special good luck to all of us when it comes to dealing with administration at our respective schools!!!!!

For IMG's both scores are important! Kaptest's study showed that Step 2 CK score is better Residency Match predictor than USMLE Step 1 score. Step 1 is important because of most of AMG's apply with USMLE Step 1 score only, but for us(IMG's) both scores are important!

Hi.I'm an IMG, YOG-2009.
step 1 - 221/94 ,step2- 228/99 ,cs- 1st attempt.
i was ECFMG certified in Dec 2011, and applied to just one program, where I was observing,as the staff encouraged me to,even though I wasn't too keen. But it didn't work out. Now,at that time,I didn't know the about the concept of "re-applicant status".
I have as it is been very very scared,as my scores aren't quite excellent, and I do have gaping holes in my CV.And now this is an added stress.
Yet to take my step 3.
I have held 2 clinical jobs in my home country, and did a 4 week observership in US.No research background.
I need to know my realistic chances, and also the strategy for applying, and the kind of programs to aim for.
Any help or advice is most welcome and greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
And goodluck to everyone here!!

This isn't really accurate. Step 1 is more important for IMG's because it is a rough guide to an IMG's ability. So, the Step 1 score is used, in the first instance, to filter out the better IMG candidates.

In the case of US grads, the MSPE or Dean's letter is most important since it accurately summarizes a student's performance compared to their peers.

It as been said that the Step 2 score is the better predictor of a successful resident. Don't know how generally held this opinion is, though.

My IMG friend from india told me 40 of his schoolmates got matched last yr in IM. Their ave scores are 240 +/-10. My 2cents for you guys(240s)- just chill & apply more.
For you guys with 220 +/-10, I really can't say anything. because i'm one of you guyz.
But there's hope, the new trend now for ave to low scores is peds. (FM is competitive now, requires 6-12mos USCE)
I agree with eduardod, sometimes its not only the scores. Residency in your country is also a big plus. (been reading 2012 PGY1 profiles)
I hope somebody could give his/her 2cents about my scores.

btw i just heard this or maybe its old stuff -- AMG > carribean & european IMG > all other IMGs. applying to programs with carribean img doesnt mean its img friendly. So choose wisely & best of luck all.

hmmm. happen to notice all these outstanding credentials here. here's one dedicated to those silent ones just viewing posts & feeling down.

step1-208
step2-215
cs-1st attempt
yog 2009
img, GC
3mos USCE, 3 US LORS, no research, no awards, cv blank as paper (except for usce)
applying fr 2013 match

while doing USCE, i ask almost evry1s score. all 25 i asked have >225, which means 25imgs are already better than me plus all these good ones who posted here. but who is to say that i or you won't make it, and by God (or any supreme being above), I will match. You will match.

I hope you match!

People like you make up >50% of the IMG's going for the match (because obv. not all IMG's managed to BEAT the mean of each step score).

The scores that people post on various forums are just based on self-selection (lower scores wont post).

Being positive is all it takes sometimes.

Like most of you I'm also anxious about all the applicants with great scores, I'm planning to apply to 100 programs, but I don't really know how I should sort them out, they all appear great on their sites. I don't really if not needing visa is a good boost. Good look to all and thank you for your advice in this process.

just apply to the 100 IMG-friendly programs you find, you can choose later basing on which programs interview you.

dont worry. your scores are okay w/ the type of visa you have. and also mine's even 1 step below yours.. there's a lot of low scores img who still match. dont mind the big scores posting in this thread, there's a lot who got scores just like ours (just too shy to posts).

U need one more LOR for your application to be evaluated by the programs. If you don't have 3 LORs, most of the programs will automatically filter out your application as it will not meet their requirements. Ur usmle scores are average (step1) and below average (ck), so i would suggest that you take step3 to give ur application a boost. Step3 will also help u with the visa issues most IMGs have. gL 2 u.

I don't think that Step 3 really helps with visa issues. It'll make the application more attractive, since it is a hurdle overcome, but I don't think it makes a difference in respect with a visa. Correct me if am wrong, please.

It does. A lot of programs have mentioned that to get H1b visa, the person should be done with step3 by a specific date (usually january-march in most programs). So yes, it makes a difference.

99.9% of programs have mentioned the REQUIREMENT of atleast 3 LORs, not just for IMGs but for AMGs as well. If you have less than 3, you will not satisfy the requirements of most (if not all) of the programs.
Use Frieda, and check out some programs on their given website, you'll get an idea about what i am talking about.

That makes 3. U r good 2 go. Even though, the home country LOR will have less weightage, it still counts, esp if its from the dean of medicine of your home country.

Yes, you need Step 3 for a H1B, but most programs don't offer it and those that do say they will only grant it for an exceptional candidate. So, someone with average USMLE scores, even if they have Step 3, is not going to get a H1B. It is good to have Step 3 but I don't think it will make you a H1B candidate.

I've gone through about 250+ program requirements by now and not all programs mention that H1b is only for 'exceptional candidates'. Some do, others just mention that they offer both J1 and H1b visa, and for H1b, you need to be done with step3 by a specific date.

Default IMG-friendly University Hospitals?

Does anybody know about any IMG-friendly university hospitals?
I believe most of them are not, but are there any ones that are?
Thanks.

Ummm. Mr. green card and 3 US LORs, I dont think you'd have any problem matching as long as you dont mess up your interviews...

Pros: YOG, UScE, LOR
Cons: scores, visa status.
Community colleges in undeserved areas won't have scores as a filter. You should look at individual program requirements.

Some programs that do not sponsor visas DO accept the J1 visa sponsored by ecfmg. But you will need to call them up to know for sure. Some even accept H1b sponsored by yourself using private attorneys

Hi, I am a recent graduate ( 2011 April) and came to USA in June 2011 on family based worked permit visa. I worked in a gas station and a RESTURANT as a part time for my financial support for around 6 months. I finished my steps ( 1, 2 ck & cs in may 2012) and then 3 months clinical rotations in a hospital. Right now I am engaged in a clinical research. I am wondering if I should include the work in gas station and RESTURANT in my ERAS application, because if I don't, there will be a gap of almost one whole year. Please give me your views if I should include it in ERAS or not? Please step taker or somebody truly help me decide! Thank you !

so what are my chances for IM?I will be applying mainly to community programs in NYC and Chicago, though I will apply widely.

It is really very depressing to see people with excellent profiles not matching, i am rally very scared.

Ashake.. you have a great profile which should give you a good set of interviews. Matching really is beyond just your profile, where your performance at the interview, rank order list and LORs come in to play.

Good luck!

Adhoc! Please include your job in restaurant and gas station. It will add another dimension to your profile. In your LOR you wont have to state that you have worked hard and struggled. Your experience will speak for itself!

Ill join in on the waiting fun..

SCHOOL-- Caribbean grad, 3rd and 4th year done in US hospitals
YOG- 2012
USMLE STEP 1 -214
USMLE STEP 2 CK-224
USMLE CS- passed 1st attempt
ECFMG not yet.
STEP 3 - will take after match
USCE- 72 Weeks
Research and publication- none

VISA - not needed
LoRs- 4 US, 2 IM (one very good, one average), 1 Cardiology (generic), 1 Neurology (very good)
Repeat Applicant- NO
Application 100% complete, Submitted 9/15

Applied to a total of 150 programs, hoping for 20 interviews and planning to go on the 10 best ones based on location, univ affiliation, and fellowships. I was told i would be offered 2 interviews at the hospitals i've done my IM electives and Sub-I at, so hopefully they follow through on that offer. Good luck to everyone!

I divided it up fairly evenly, 1/3rd university programs (mostly programs that have taken IMG's in the past), 1/3rd community with univ affiliations, and 1/3rd just community. Im not expecting too many university invites, i'd be pretty happy with 2-3.

Hey halo2013,not all programs send you confirmation mails, only very few do.So don't freak out.Getting interview mails/notifications is much better than recieving these confirmatory mails.
All the best.
