Default Step 3, Medical education gap

What is the importance/relevance of taking step 3 prior to applying to ERAS. Do directors of IMG friendly programs consider step 3 on applications a positive thing?

Also, concerning gaps in medical education. Could medical (education/training/work) inactivity starting in September (eras applications) through to interviews (Nov/Dec/Jan) be a problem?

Please share your opinions, it would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

I think you are asking quite interesting questions & want your thread to go back on top so more knowledgeble people can help you.

From what I know/understand, step 3 is not mandatory when it comes to applying for residencies but it can be a plus for IMGs. I guess that if you have two similar applications a PD could potentially prefer the one with a step 3 results as it will reassure them in a way.

I do not think that doing "nothing" btw Sept in January is an issue. I will let others confirm that.

I spent a little time on FREIDA and happened to see that a FM program would consider IMGs only they had passed step 3

I agree with what has been said above. Though few programs will require IMGs to pass step 3 before the match most don't need it. having a decent step3 score especially if you have low to average scores on the other steps could improve your application. However, step 3 is kind of a wild card and not something you should be taking unless you are comfortable giving it. If you have average scores and fail step 3 due to poor preparation that would be terrible.
I don't think the time during interview season is a red flag if you are just attending interviews.
