Wink I received my PTAL

Hi guys...just checked the mail and I found an envelope from Medical Board of California...it must be my sixth sense coz I just checked my account today morning since I haven't heard from them for a long time...every detail was approved so I was sitting there and guessing when will I get my letter...I applied for PTAL in December 2009, thinking it was a bit late...as it takes roughly around 9 months...thankfully step 2 ck was the only exam that was left for me I gave that in March 2010....trust me the board is so systematic.....so I guess I got mine in 7 months....not bad.
u don't have to contact the board like we have to bother ECFMG for any problem they have a quick update system.....I will upload the entire process for PTAL application so that u guys can benefit too.....maybe in an hour..I want to enjoy for sometime.

Smile hey

so finally i m writing my experience with california board...
i sent my froms L1A to L1E first as they r sent by the applicant.....along with tht i also printed the fingerprint forms and got tht done......n sent my step 1 transcripts thru FSMB.....
then i sent a copy of L2 and L5 [ L6 optional]to my college,my uncle did my college work as i stay in US.....
remember for 4 weeks of psychiatry add 2 weeks of med school rotation and 2 weeks of internship rotation...regarding family medicine....for all asian countries like[india china] preventive and social medicine is considered as family medicine
make multiple copies of form L5 and fill all ur rotations starting from 2nd yr medical school to ur internship.....provide adequate spacing so tht they can read well........i m tellin u to fill up the form coz my college ppl were least interested in doin so....u can tell ur family to do if u want to play safe.....then get it checked by ur college officials and then signed by dean.....
also get ur diploma copies signed by ur dean....now ur done with the major work...
then send these documents L2 L5 and diploma copies all in one...by fed ex or normal mail ur choice....
then i gave my step 2 ck in march and sent the transcripts asap.....in the mean time board will send u a letter if they need any other documents for ur application....as i stay in california mails reached faster so i cud reply quickly...
ohh yes i forgot to mention...once u send form L1 along with fees $493...after receipt of these documents california board will write a letter sending u ur account information....ur username and password...u can access it n check ur status as u like....
so far so good...after reading this if u hav any doubts pls leave a message on this thread i will reply...bye cya

Post hi

ptal is postgraduate training authorization letter issued by medical board of california....california is the only state tht issues this letter...its needed for american as well as international graduates to apply for residency in california.....some hosp do call even without the letter but then u need to submit one before rank order list of college is prepared........
thts y california is not img frdly state.....for california letter one needs social security number, only H1b visa,F1visa,green card and US citizen have one...
its very time consuming process around 6 to 9 months.....i got mine in 7 months
ptal is considered as LOR......hope this solves ur doubt...n helps in ur application....

Default need help regarding PTAL application. I am an IGM from india.

hello prachu85_v,
Please can you help? I am applying to PTAL. In the application instructions they are asking 'original official medical school transcript'. But, in India medical school's donít sent original transcripts right? How did you handle this?
Is it ok if we make a photo copy of transcript and get it stamped, signed, sealed and sent directly from medical school to California medical board?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Dr.Reddy
I studied in India and when they made my official transcript they put a photo of me on it and printed it on proper paper.

In America, official transcript just requires a seal. They don't understand that other countries is different.

So, when I sent the forms that needed to be signed and sent to the Board, I sent them an ID photo of mine to affix and make another "official transcript" to send to the board and that's what they did.

I've had no problem and all documents were approved. Quite fast actually.

Hope this helps!

Thanks prachu85_v for this wonderful post. My question is, at what part of the application is the SSN required. Since its a lengthy procedure, i was wondering if i can begin my application and submit my ssn once i have it. I am guessing it will take me approx 7-8 months to have my EAD card. Or would you recommend that i apply for it only when i have my SSN.
Thanks in advance for your reply

Default PTAL - form L6

Hi,

Does anyone out there have any experience with the L6 forms, i.e. have you completed any of your rotations outside of your main teaching hospital, eg. abroad? If so, did you have those hospitals sign your paperwork or did you just use L5 and have your med school verify everything (-- since in the end your school gave you credit for everything, it could make sense...)

Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi!
Thanx for the informative post... I have graduated from india and do have my official transcript which has 2 weeks of psychiatry(during my 2nd year) and internship completion certificate ( separate from official transcript) which shows the other 2 weeks.. So should I ask my medical school to make a transcript combining them both for the required 4 weeks (else the transcript will show 2 weeks and my application will show 4) or do i send the certified copies of both??
Thanx for the help.

Hi guys!
I was wondering if any of you are medical school graduates from India and had to get a separate letter stating that Family medicine is equal to Preventive and Social medicine in India from our medical school for the PTAL application?

Thanks!
