Listening Step 1 Score 208; It there a chance!

Hello guys,

I am Manish Ghai from Pune and I am preparing for USMLE.
Graduation done in 2010, completed step 1 with 208 score, I am little slow for step 2 ck preparation also.
I want anyone's honest opinion as I am new to this site.
Is there chance for me to get residency?
I know no one can be sure but ur words can surely help me..

Thank you

Sorry I guess that's very misleading ........

there are a number of cases where people have made it with low score , but the you have to work hard , will need to do months or even a year of USCE ie externships or eve observerships ....research will add to your profile also .

but get a good score on step 2 , dont rush take nbme , confirm a 240 on it then go for step 2 ...... then do good amount of USCE , you will make it . Thats the beauty of usmle , its never over for residency unless you keep on doing blunders

even with this score , you can get pysch or FM but for IM need to work more on rest of the steps .....

goodluck .........

Getting a great score on Step 2 CK will undo some of the harm of the mediocre score on Step 1. No fatal mistakes yet.

Look, I can blow smoke up his ass and tell him that everything will be peachy or give him the hard reality. The truth is the residency situation in the US is getting more and more competitive with each passing year. By 2016 there will be a nearly 1:1 match of US D.O./M.D. grads for residency spots. That means whatever is left over will go to Caribbean U.S. citizen grads and there won't be much of anything for FMGs.

Even right now it's getting extremely competitive and being an FMG with a mediocre step 1 score, no USCE + need for visa means hardly any PD will look at his application unless he has connections. I'd advise looking into other countries like UK, Australia or even the middle east. Or better yet, just stay in India and serve your country, I'm sure the brain drain doesn't help them.

Oh , here we go again . You are one those FMGs who like to discourage others and believe this will lower competition .

Have a look here :

http://www.usmleforum.com/files/forum/2012/4/682257.php

http://www.usmleforum.com/files/forum/2012/4/685872.php

Apart from these , the person here has just got a low score on step1 .

1) Can cover it up on step 2

2) Can get USCE ....... and LORS ........ not impossible

3) Can do research

all these can get him contacts too , its definitely possible even if he needs visa ...

The point to all who wonder if they will match with a low score is : Are you willing to work for it ahead no matter what happened to your scores , even if you dont match are you ready to work a year more on USCE to improve your profile ? If yes then USMLE is for you ...... its just how determined you are ....

the rest crap about match by 2016 ...I would say community hospitals do take FMGs with better scores over AMG and Caribbean U.S. citizen grads . Not all of AMGs have a good score . Many FMGs have made it to university hospitals too ........ please dont discourage others .. wont help you either . In the end its upto the him how determined he is to go ahead but its definitely possible to get residency even after this score .......

I can perfectly relate to your condition..i am in the same boat..213 in step 1..and never saw it coming because my last NBME scores were much higher..felt sad, hopeless and felt the road has ended for me..it was when i posted on this forum and of course Hitman helped me out..gave me awesome advise and i felt better..later i also contacted two seniors from my college, one who will appear for this year's match and one who has been matched this year. They repeated the same thing that Hitman said..Even i went to the extent of mailing to bassatom(the famous step 1 experience writer) and even he said the same..IM may be difficult but PM,FM and Pschy are definitely good options..i myself will apply for 2016 match with no visa...and will be needing visa..i can give you the link where Hitman gave me valuable tips(for which i am really grateful)..and also a link in SDN where AMG replied to my query and since they know the situation better than me,i trust them too..its a dream to get a residency in USA..if you think you can do it,you will make it..

Dont listen to such people who by discouraging others think it will imporve their chances

US HAS N WILL ALWAYS HAVE LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE

5150joker try harder to discourage others ,u are not doing good .

FMG constitutes more than 25% work force of medical sysytem of US ,they are very open minded and encouraging towards FMG.
