Search How should I select residency programs?

Hi friends,

I am going to apply for 2013 match. I am interested in IM and I am going through Frieda and making a list of IMG friendly programs all over the US. But the list is getting really long. I have two questions:

1. If I want to apply to approximately 80-100 programs, how should I decide where to apply? I mean what should be my criteria of grading them?

2. Should I apply to FM/Peds as a back up? (I am not really interested in FM/Peds)

I would suggest you apply to all the IMG friendly programs that you find even though they are more than 80-100 programs. This is specially true if you have a mediocre profile, I mean just usual scores and average USCE and LoR.

You can start lowering the number if you meet the following conditions:
- You don't have enough money to apply to more.
- You profile is super strong with few years since graduation, very high USMLE scores, no need for visa, long USCE, great LoR, Research, ...etc

How to lower the number?
Pick the programs with higher reputation (such as Universities and University affiliated, more AMGs), pick the places (States) that you prefer over others. This applies if your profile is strong.
If your profile is weak and you have to lower the number because of financial restriction then I suggest you do the reverse, mean go for lower reputation programs and programs that extremely IMG friendly (all residents are IMGs)

Backup Application:
Again it depends on your profile. If you have a weak profile you may want to apply for backup programs but before you do that ask yourself this question (Do you prefer doing FM residency in USA over the specialty of your choice in your country/other country?)
